• A piece of land surrounded by water from all side.• Indian territory includes two group of island

– Andaman and Nicobar Island – Lakshadweep

• Located at far off distances from Mainland India .• The warm and clean waters are conducive for coral growth.• This Island groups we come across colonies of live corals.• Corals are very sensitive to temperature, even a slight increase

in the sea surface temperature leads to bleaching of corals.• The corals are considered as highly sensitive indicators of

global climate change.

THE ISLANDS

Lakshadweep

• PHYSIOGRAPHY– Group of 36 islands, inlets

and reefs located in the Arabian Sea.

– Form submerged mountain range containing Lakshadweep-Maldives and Chagos group of Island.

– Of coral origin developed around volcanic peaks.

– Large lagoons are located to the western sides of these island.

– The land in any island does not rise above 5m from sea level .

– Some islands become visible only during low tide have no hills and stream.

• CLIMATE– Warm tropical climate– Summer temperature varies

from 22 deg C to 35 deg C– Winter temperature varies

from 20 deg C 32 deg C• NATURAL VEGETATION

– Small trees and bushes– Lahshdweep-archipelago is a

separate eco region– Coral reef with unique flora

and fauna– Uninhabitant atolls are

breeding grounds for sea turtles, birds. Tuna, swordfish

• AGRICULTURE– A large area is under coconut

cultivation in – India’s largest producer of

coconut.

– Rich in marine life fishing is the main livelihood of the islanders.

– Tuna fish and fish products are exported from these islands.

INDUSTRYMain industry of Lakshadweep is coconut fiber ex traction and production of fiber items.

TOURISMWatersports activities such as scuba diving, wind surfing, water skiing, etc. are tourist attraction.

• 572 group of islands; 38 are inhabitant, one is active volcano and others are not yet discovered properly

• Andaman is separated by nicobar by tenth degree channel in terms of pysiography

• Coral reefs are in form of fringing reefs around few island

• In form of submerged mountain chain

• NATURAL VEGETATION– Wet evergreen forest,

mangrove forest, timber species of commercial value, aromatic resins tree, rudraksha tree

– Wild life wife boar, barking deer, elephants, reptiles

• AGRICULTURE– Coconut and arecanut are cash

crop, – Mango, pineaple, orange,

banana are grown on hilly land– Cultivation of different spices

like pepper, clove, nutmeg
