AS 2014 DRAWS TO A CLOSE, WE LIST SOME OF INDIA’S MOST IMPORTANT ACHIEVEMENTS IN THE YEAR FROM VARIOUS
FIELDS, RANGING FROM MEDICINE TO OUTER SPACE.
The GSAT-14 communication satellite was launched by the GSLV-D5 rocket on January 5. The launch is significant because the third stage of the launch vehicle was powered by an Indian-made cryogenic engine.
In a major victory for Indian diplomacy, on January 15 the US returned ancient sculptures, worth $1.5 million and dating back to the 11-12th century which were stolen from temples all over India by thieves specializing in art theft
On March 27, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared that India was free from the clutches of the dreaded disease of polio
On April 4, India's successfully launched its second navigation satellite IRNSS-1B. The satellite is a navigation tool, which will help motorists reach their destination in a hassle-free way.
In a major victory for transgenders in the country, The Supreme Court on April 15 recognized that transgenders are a third gender, thus opening the doors for them to live a dignified life
The Indian Space Research Organization on June 30 put five foreign satellites in orbit aboard the PSLV-C23 launch vehicle. This was for the first time that an Indian rocket had achieved this feat.
The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana was launched on August 28. This ambitious scheme will enable millions of people to open bank accounts for the first time.
Probably the biggest achievement of the year was the success of the country’s Mars Orbiter Mission, when the Mangalyaan spacecraft entered the Mars orbit on September 24. India joined the select club of five countries which have successfully send spacecraft to Mars.
Acknowledging ISRO’s expertise, NASA signed an agreement with India’s space agency to collaborate on a new earth-observing satellite called NISAR and future missions to Mars.
The 2014 Nobel Peace Prize was jointly awarded to India's Kailash Satyarthi, who has waged a heroic battle to free enslaved children.
