MARIO TESTINO

Mario Testino (age 59) is one of the worlds most well known and celebrated fashion photographers; he is a Peruvian fashion photographer; he was born on the 20th October in 1954 in Lima, Peru. He was one of six children in a middle class family. However when he was younger he wanted to be a priest; he studied economics at Universidad del Pacifico. In 1976 he went to London to study photography. He dyed his hair pink so that he could get noticed by photographers. In 1982 he permanently moved to London. His work has been featured in magazines such as Vogue and Vanity Fair. His road to fame came when he was chosen by Diana, Princess of Wales, to do her photo shoot for Vanity Fair in 1997; since this Testino has regularly been employed by the British royal family to take their photographs. He has been described as being “the worlds most prolific magazine and fashion trade photographer” by Aaron Hicklin. Recently he has shot for Prince William and Catherine Middleton on the occasion of their engagement in December 2010.

MARIO TESTINO?

The medium that is used in this photograph is digital

coloured photography. The subject of the photograph

is a women, she is sitting on the floor so the picture

looks like it has been taken from low down at eye

level; this is shown as we can see is looking directly

into the camera. This is a portrait photograph which

portrays fashion. The shutter speed used in this

picture is 100th to 200th of a second; because of this

we assume that the photographer was either using a

tripod or not using one. The aperture used in this

picture would be big, it would be take with an aperture

of F4; we can see this as the background is blurred

and the women is in focus. The lighting used in this

picture is very soft and subtle. In this picture a lot of

shapes are used to create the picture; you can see this

with the structure of the woman’s arms, as she has

them placed in a triangular position. A leading line is

created in this picture from her knee to her face. The

colour scheme used in this picture are very subtle as

nude colours have been used; also the woman’s clothes

match the background of the sofa.

PICTURE ONE ANALYSIS

This is a fashion photograph which has been shot with a digital coloured photograph medium; it is a close up of a women. The women looks as if she dazed or deep in thought, the filter that has been applied to this image also gives the image a summer aspect. As the edges are over exposed to light; the aperture used would be around f8 as the background is blurred out a bit. A tripod may have been used for this picture as it is a close up portrait photograph of the face. The saturation may have been adjusted with as the top of her hair is very light. I like this picture as it tells a story of a women who is either deep in thought, or is dazed.

PICTURE TWO ANALYSIS

The medium of of this image is a digital

coloured photograph which has been

converted into a black and white photograph.

The subject is a silhouette of a women who is

creating shapes with her arms. It is a portrait

fashion picture that has a shutter speed of a

round about 100th of a second and an

aperture of around F2 to F4. This picture

could be taken using a tripod or without using

a tripod. The lighting used in this picture

could be sharp as the outline of the women is

fairly sharp. The contrast between the

lightness of the background brings out her

body more. Natural lighting has been used for

this picture as it has been taken right in front

of a window; a light reflector has been used in

this photograph, this is shown on her corset

PICTURE THREE ANALYSIS

This image is a digital coloured photograph; it has been taken on a dark colour background and has been converted into a black and white photograph. The women is the subject of this picture . This is a landscape picture, it would consist of a large aperture and a shutter speed of around about a 100th of a second. The lighting on her face is very soft and subtle just highlighting the cheekbones; this lighting has come from a flash which has been reflected by her hair. The darkness of the background highlights the women more as she is lighter than the background.

PICTURE FOUR ANALYSIS

PICTURE ONE

In my picture I tried too create the triangles that the model in Mario Testino’s

photograph created with her arms; this was successful as I told my model how

to place her arms and as a result managed to get the correct shapes in the

photograph. The use of flash and light reflector abled me to get the light to

hit off of one side of her face. I managed to find a location which was like

the one in the original photograph by Mario Testino; the background of the

picture is a neutral colour which enables the model to be the main feature of

the picture. I also got my model to wear glasses just like the model in the

original photograph. However if I was to take this photograph again I would

do it landscape like the original photograph and make the model where more

neutral colours.

PICTURE ONE ANALYSIS

PICTURE TWO

For this image I have tried to mimic the triangular shape created by the Mario

Testino’s model. Even though my model is doing the same pose as the model

in the original photograph the image still looks different. This could be due

to the fact that my image has not been taken as close a the original image has.

Due to me having no background to my image, only the white studio

background I think that it does not have to same effect as the original

photograph that has been taken outside. I could have also used an aperture

around f8 to get the background to be blurred like the original image. At the

time of me taking this image there was not a red filter available to put on the

light so sadly I was unable to get that effect.

PICTURE TWO ANALYSIS

PICTURE THREE

In this photograph I used a light reflector so that I could try and get more

light on the abdominal area of my model; however I do not think I was very

successful with this as my models abdominal area looks the same as the rest of

her body. I converted my photograph to black and white in order to replicate

the original photograph by Mario Testino. I did manage to get my background

to be lighter than my model like the original photograph, by doing this it

makes my model stand out. However if I was to take this picture again I

would take it in front of a window so that I would have more light exposure. I

also got my model to pose so that she would make triangles with her arms just

like the model in Mario Testino’s photograph.

PICTURE THREE ANALYSIS

PICTURE FOUR

I converted this photograph to black and white like the original photograph

and took it on a dark background like Mario Testino did. I used a light

reflector to add a shine to the models hair and I also used flash. I got my

model to stand side on like the original picture so that I could attempt to get

the same effect that Testino did. If I was to take this photograph again I

would try to get more light on the side of the face that is visible.
