In 1957, Jay Pritzker decided to buy a hotel in Los Angeles that belonged to Hyatt Van Dehn, a California real estate investor. Hyatt Hotels corporation was therefore born.

In 1966, Hyatt took over the completion of the Hyatt Regency Atlanta. This hotel designed by John Portman, made an impact on the travelling public because of its spectacular multi-storey atrium with lush trees, hanging greenery, sculptures and glittering glass elevators.

Hyatt became an international company in 1969, opening the Hyatt Regency Hong Kong, its first hotel overseas- a hotel which closed at the end of 2005. Hyatt international is a separate company created by the Pritzkers to manage it overseas hotels.

Twenty years later, the company was managing 60 properties and its flagship hotel – the first Grand Hyatt- opened on Hong Kong Island.
