v minulosti sa preslávil stretnutiami korunovaných hláv, ukrývaním poľských korunovačných klenotov a väznením Mórica Beňovského, šľachtica, cestovateľa a kráľa Madagaskaru
rulers met here in the past, it is the place where Polish coronation jewels were hidden and where famous adventurer, noble man and King of Madagascar, Móric Beňovský was imprisoned
hrad vznikol na rozhraní 13. a 14. storočia. Hrad Ľubovňa sa v čase svojho vzniku zaradil do systému pohraničných hradov na severe Uhorska
the Ľubovňa Castle was built at the turn of the 13thand 14th century, when it became a part of the boundary castles system in the north of the Hungarian Kingdom
okrem ochrany poľsko-uhorskej hranice zabezpečoval dôležitú obchodnú cestu prechádzajúcu dolinou rieky Poprad do Poľska
besides the protection of the former Polish-Old Hungarian border, its task was to secure the important trade route passing along the valley of the Poprad river to Poland
v roku 1412 sa v Hrade Ľubovňa uskutočnilo historické stretnutie uhorského kráľa Žigmunda Luxemburského s poľským panovníkom Vladislavom II.

v rámci obnovy hradu ho úspešne zrekonštruovali a v súčasnosti doň umiestnili expozície hradného múzea
v roku 1991 bola obnovená a znovu vysvätená hradná kaplnka, v ktorej sa usporadúvajú bohoslužby
