There is NO future tense in English!!! How can we talk about the future then?

1. The modal WILL

There are several ways to talk about the future:

1. with the modal WILL, 2. with BE GOING TO,

3. with the present simple,

4. with the present continuous.

HOW TO TALK ABOUT THE FUTURE

We use the modal WILL + the infinitive form of the main verb for:

1. predictions, 2. quick decisions,

3. promises.

You will get married and have ten children!

I will have fish, please.

Ok! I will call you tomorrow.

I WILL (’ll) call

You WILL (’ll) call He / She WILL (’ll) call

We WILL (’ll) call You WILL (’ll) call They WILL (’ll) call

We use the present simple for timetables / programmes / schedules.

I leave

You leave He / She leaves

We leave You leave They leave

My train leaves in 15 minutes!

3. The PRESENT SIMPLE

2. BE GOING TO

We use BE GOING TO + the infinitive form of the main verb for:

1. plans / intentions, 2. predictions based on clear signs.,

I am going to + V

You are going to + V He / She is going to + V

We are going to + V You are going to + V They are going to + V

I am going to work hard to become a rock star!

Look at those clouds! It is going to rain.

REMEMBER!!!

4. The PRESENT CONTINUOUS

We use the present continuous when we have plans / arrangements.

I am playing

You are playing He / She is playing

We are playing You are playing They are playing

Sorry, I’m playing tennis on Monday, but I’m not doing anything on Tuesday!
