Study- basic understanding.
Home work is only minor part of study.
Study means self study –includes
1) Reading 2) Notes 3) Analyzing 4) Memorizing 5) Reproducing and 6) Adding ahead
Factors interfering in study
Out of five and half hours, Two hours goes for
home work
Remains only three and half hours for real study.
That too for a very serious study.
Tuition Classes Eats study time. Proves child is
having less I Q. School choice was
wrong. Teachers not good.
Self Study is the best.
How to Study?
Complete time table of the day
Target for the day Target for the month Target for the year. Decide the best time for
the Study. Follow the plan strictly Don’t wait for your mood
Planning The study
Plan Ahead. Plan blocks of 40 to 60 min. study. Gap of few min after each block
Walk or exercise or memorize, etc. Check back the target every one hour. Study the difficult in fresh mood. Figures, sketches may be taken in
between period of the blocks.
Study methods
1) Text book study 2) Problem solving method 3) Study groups 4) Mind mapping 5) Few techniques
Text book study
Know your text book completely Know what chapters contains Study each chapter as a whole First read through entire chapter. Fast. Then read Through Titles and subtitles. Read the subtitle, Stop. Think what is the
central idea. Mark few important items. Be selective. Work your way through each subsection,
Reading, thinking, marking. Go over it again…repeat, repeat, repeat.
Text book study-- Notes
Running lecture notes. Running study notes.
Stresses some important key words. Marks the important points and concepts.
Create your own notes Main heading on top. Subtitles in the margin. High lightened Points in front of them including definitions. Finally cover the points and see if you recollect
Example of good notes writing
Title– Digestion in humans Oral cavity: contains teeth, tongue,
salivary glands, palate, etc. Teeth : helps chewing and crushing food Tongue: moves the food in oral cavity . helps swallow the food bolus. Salivary glands: secretes saliva. saliva gives fluid medium to mix
the food digests carbohydrates.
Composition of saliva: S. amylase
Studying from book and notes
Be your teacher- prepare mock question. Answer without looking. Correct your errors. If you are reading functions of saliva, Then ask first what are the functions of saliva. If you are studying the transmission of the sound
then ask how the sound is transmitted. Never forget How, Why, What, When, Who,etc.
SQ4R Method for notes
1) Survey: Survey the book Survey the chapter.
Tables, charts, contents, questions at the end of chapter.
2) Questions: Answer all and more questions. Think which more questions can be asked
in examination. And prepare them.
4 R’s
Read, Recall, Write, Reviews. 1) Read: Keep the questions in mind as
you read and attempt to answer them while reading. Read again and again. The next day lecture should be read on
prior day. Immediately coming form the school the
home work should be completed and the taught portion should be studied.
4 R’s
Recall: recall what is read every 10 min. Write: Jot down the important points,
major ideas, clues, etc. Reviews: of what has been completed
and what is to be completed.
Other important methods
1) Cover and test method. 2) Problem solving method. 3) Teaching fellow students. 4) Spin a yarn or make a story out of the
chapter. 5) Study groups. Divide the work. Discuss. 6) Mnemonics. 7)Abbrevations. 8) MIND MAPPING
Abbreviations
Very useful to memorize the lists Helps to keep the sequence. Frequently used. For ex.
Vibgyor – Violet, indigo, green, yellow, orange, red.
Mnemonics
Are used to remember lists, names, etc.
Miss Venus eats maple jelly soup under nerds porch.
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto
Mind mapping.
Write down the key Idea. Think up various key
points. Depict them as branches
flowing out of the main idea.
Use your own key words. Thickness should be
reduced from start to last. Use single color for the
one idea.
Mnemonic created by one of student
NAGAD BAJE N- nasal passage. A- adenoids. G- glottis. A- air pipe or wind pipe D- division. B- bronchi A- Alveoli. J- juxtaposition. E- exchange of O2 and
CO2
