HOW TO GIVE A PRESENTATIONElizabeth Brownlow
Rule #1:
Teamwork!
Exchange e-mails and phone numbers
Meet. A lot.
Decide who is responsible for what.
Check in with each other frequently.
Make sure everybody knows due dates.
Create goal dates for each part.
Practice, practice, practice! Together.
Rule #2:
Focus your topic
1. Pick only one aspect.2. Ask a research question and set
out to answer it.3. Too much information can be just
as harmful as too little information.
4. Sources should have to do with your topic directly.
5. Each person’s work should contribute to the presentation.
Research Questions: Who is my audience? What does my audience
know about my topic? What do I want my
audience to walk away knowing about my topic?
Where can I find the information I want them to know?
Rule #3:
Be a Detective
Now you get to play detective and find information! But, how?
Tertiary Sources: A good place to start
Secondary Sources: Great for synthesized information
Primary Sources: Let’s get some examples up in here!
Rule #4:
Organize your information
1. Step back and look at the information you have gathered.
2. Classify it. (What is this source about?)
3. Group together sources with the same classifications.
Now you have topics!4. Place your topics into a logical
order that will make sense to your audience.
Organizational Thoughts… Do I have a thesis
statement, as well clear topic sentences?
Does each topic have enough information?
Do my topics follow a logical order? Or does the information jump around with no clear organization?
Rule #5:
Put the ‘Media’ in Multimedia
Choose one presentation tool as a basis.
Here are some really great ideas:

Once you’ve selected your base presentation tool, use pictures, videos, websites, illustrations, charts, and graphics to support each point you make.
Remember, the goal is to catch the audience’s attention without overwhelming or distracting them from your topics.
Rule #6:
Think Practically
Information Overload is a real thing
Make sure all information supports your main point
Keep the audience’s attention Order things logically

Be prepared!!!Check: Do your links/gifs/sounds/videos
work? Do you have back up link options? Do you have all of your information
saved to more than one place? Does your presentation make sense? Is your presentation easy to use and
understand?
