Dear Colleague,Welcome to the Access & Widening Participation Unit’s booklet of activities for 2011–12. These activities allow us to support your curriculum and widen access to higher education, which is central to our mission at the University of Greenwich. This booklet will help you to plan a dynamic programme for your students that will raise aspirations and attainment and engage students with higher education.

This programme is for young people and adults in south-east London, Kent and Medway who:

● Have the potential to succeed in higher education

● Will be first in their family to enter higher education.

The university is committed to increase the numbers of people in higher education from a range of backgrounds, including those from:

● Areas of high deprivation

● Areas of low participation in higher education

● Low-income backgrounds

● Vocational courses.

We also work with under-represented groups in higher education and have a track record of success in supporting looked-after children, care leavers and those with a disability,

To book an activity, simply contact us using the details on the back cover. Due to circumstances beyond our control, some dates/times may change; however, we will do our best to contact you should changes occur.

If none of our events meet your needs, please contact us as we may be able to develop bespoke activities.

We look forward to working with you.

Workshops Conflict

Different ideas, ideologies, beliefs and opinions give rise to conflict, whether within the home, between groups, within a nation or between nations. Perhaps one day we will even see conflict between different worlds! The history of humanity has been one of survival intertwined with conflict and co-operation. With the passage of time and social progress, people have found new ways to live together but also new ways to destroy each other. Our contemporary society dramatically illustrates the destructive (and constructive) potential of new technologies and global communications. These conflicts can, on a larger scale, lead to war and the contemporary phenomenon of terrorism.

Is conflict inevitable? What are the reasons for political conflict? Can anything be done to prevent conflict? Does conflict inevitably end in violence? Should political conflict be governed by a set of rules? Is conflict resolution simply a matter of might over right? This workshop will consider these issues.

Thinking through the Green Problem

In confronting what is called the ‘environmental crisis’, philosophy can help us to understand the relationship between the human being, nature and technology. By asking ourselves about what it is to be human or what ‘nature’ is, we can investigate how we live and explore options for a better way of living and being. Is technology

Page 9: Greenwich University Activities

16 17

something we control or something that controls us? Is it inevitable that we consume the environment? Is nature something distinct from the human, and do we have a duty to look after it, or should we embrace technology as the only way in which we might solve the crisis? What are our responsibilities in the face of the extinction of animal and plant species?

In this workshop, students will explore some of the complex interdependencies between the human being, nature and technology and try to identify the hidden elements within the discussion of the environmental crisis.

Bling Sociology: Are We a Lost Generation of Consumers?

This session analyses the changes in consumer patterns, more specifically the growth of the ‘bling’ culture in Britain, from a sociological perspective. The session addresses the following questions: What are the origins of bling culture? Why are people in society aspiring to bling culture? Is aspiring to this culture specific to younger generations? What implications does bling culture have in terms of attitudes towards professional and academic achievement for up-and-coming generations? Does bling culture and the overall notion of a consumer society signify the end of the protestant work ethic? What does the immediate future hold for bling and consumerism – especially in these difficult economic times?

The first part of this workshop will consider the theoretical and sociological discussions around changes in attitudes to consumerism from modernity to post modernity. The second half will be devoted to exploring the origins of bling culture and what constitutes it. In the final part, students will be asked to reflect upon whether ‘the end of bling is nigh’ in light of the credit crunch.
