GENERIC CONVENTIONS IN POP

DIGIPAKS

The titles and fonts used for CDs in the pop music genre

tend to be large and bold. As shown in all the albums I

chose to look at, the text overlaps the focus image, this

leaves the audience looking at the text of who the album is

by before actually looking at the photo. This works well for

the Pop music genre because the artists tend to be widely

known in the first place so the person buying the CD

already knows what they look like/

The font for female pop artists tends to be more fancy and

girly, whereas for guys like Justin Bieber or One Direction

the font is more blocked and white.

POSE AND EXPRESSION

The photography used for pop albums tends to have a

suitable composition that leaves the viewer looking at the

artist instead of the background being the main focus, this

could have been an issue with the album cover for Katy

Perry One of the Boys as she has a lot of distracting items

behind her, yet because of the way she's sat (across the

page) the focus of the page.

The expressions of the artists tend to very for who they

are, Katy Perry has more of an sexualised image so her

expression is more expectant. Whereas Ariana Grande is

seen as innocent which is shown in her Yours Truly album

cover.

The colours in Pop album Digipaks are what you would

expect, bright, primary colours. Jason Derulo’s album cover

is a prime example of this, the yellow background

harmonises nicely with his fake tattoos. The contrasting

colours of the Olly Murs album also work well to allow his

name and the album title to stand out against the track list

which uniquely features on the front of the album cover.

The colours of pop albums are made to stand out against

other genres like rock or soul which would be more likely to

use black or dark red themes.

Costume – The costumes used can range from what is in trend in modern day, much like the Enrique Iglesias album. To

Nicki Minaj, who’s known for her unique and strange outfit choices. This has made her popular though, whereas Enrique Iglesias is known for his good looks so wears plainer clothing.

Make up – Make up is much like costumes, and can range from nothing to everything. This tends to depend on what sort

of music they produce, and what they’re target audience it.

Lighting – The lighting tends to be high key, this illuminates the artist or bands face, which as they tend to be seen as

good looking this is a good thing to attract people.

Setting – A plain background or set is what normally occurs, as this; much like all the other factors, help the artist to be the

focus point.

MISE – EN - SCENE

In a lot of pop music CD covers the composition works

in a way that leaves the audience looking at the photo

and of the singer or singers and then the text included.

As shown in these album covers the artists are all

positioned in the middle of the image, and they have

visual lines that direct the attention back to the point of

interest. For example on Cher Lloyds cover, her arms

work in a way that means if you look to the edges of

the cover your eye line is brought back to her face.

Props aren't that widely used for Pop digipaks,

Photoshop is more common, as then the focus is on

the artist instead of it being on an object.

There's more props focused around the body, like

sunglasses or in the range jewellery, but not heavy

bling like in Rap CDs.

The overall message for Pop digipaks are that the artists

are good looking, appeal to the general public and in

particular their target audience. This is done through the

use of colours, font, the photography used.

The artist of band tend to connect directly with the

viewer through looking straight into the camera. When in

a band at least one of the members does this, the One

Direction album is a good example of this.
