Dr. Steve Bradley Pro Vice Chancellor (International) Lancaster University, UK

It gives me an immense pleasure to put forward GDGWI Emerging Leaders 2012 from GD Goenka World Institute (GDGWI).

GD Goenka World Institute is well recognized among leading Indian and multinational companies as one of the most respected business schools in

India. GD Goenka in partnership with Lancaster University has created a robust educational institution that ensures a strong academic

environment, which will surpass the expectations of the corporate world. The faculty, alumni and the recruiters form an indispensable core of our

approach to delivering a high quality educational experience. This quality is based on creating world-class curriculum, helping us keep pace with the

ever-changing needs of the global economy. Needless to say, our partner recruiters, alumni and specialists from across the industry have been with

us offering substantial support.

Since the beginning, GD Goenka World Institute has focused on creating a pool of budding managers, who are ready to deliver from the day they start

their job. Various interventions at the campus, such as company-based projects, competency mapping, assessment centers, mentoring from

industry, regular interaction with Lancaster faculty members and exchange of students makes GDGWI Emerging Leaders 2012 a perfect fit for

business.

Our current batch of students on the PGDBM program are from different academic streams and socio-cultural background, but all of them are highly

committed towards organizational goals and performance.

I welcome you as one of the most favored companies to the campus to be part of the Campus-2012 process. We look forward to creating a long and

We, at GDGWI, understand the direction of the winds of change and have prepared our educational programs with that in mind. It is a rare opportunity

Programme Highlights

Page 12: GDGWI Emerging Leaders 2012...PGDBM

The fundamental goal of teaching is to foster learning. Learning takes place in many different circumstances and contexts. Although everyone is capable

of learning, a student's desire to learn and excel is a vital pre-condition to effectively mastering new concepts and skills. Humans have multiple learning

styles, some learn best in a lecture atmosphere, some are motivated by discussion while others absorb best when they read and reflect on what they

have read. The classroom setting can encourage or inhibit learning depending on the dominant learning style of each student. Accommodating different

learning styles creates an atmosphere that is conducive to learning. Students take many of their learning habits from the instructor. If the instructor

doesn't show interest in the subject and a passion for learning, students are less likely to put forth the effort to learn in that class.

At GDGWI we create an atmosphere that fosters learning. One of the best ways to foster learning is to demonstrate those feelings to students and

encourage learning by creating a relaxed environment for students, stimulating conversation about concepts being presented and organising material in

a way that makes it easier to understand.

We treat subject matter as interconnected, emphasising that everything students learn should fit together into a holistic

understanding of the world, from which they develop their personal worldview. At GDGWI we help students develop a deep love and respect for

themselves, others and their environment through an open sharing of ideas and a judicious approach to discipline. When the voice of each student is

heard a conducive environment evolves and the students feel free to express themselves. Class meetings are one way to encourage such dialogue.

The faculty at GDGWI utilises a variety of teaching and learning styles. The knowledge content is covered through lectures, tutorials, workshops,

practical work & problem solving exercises, case studies, business games, simulations, business report writing, groups and individual presentations.

Students also have an opportunity to work in smaller groups.

SUMMER SCHOOL AT LANCASTERWith the growing success of the Lancaster Award that encourages students,

Lancaster University launched a new Lancaster Summer Award for Lancaster

students based at the GD Goenka World Institute campus in India.

The Lancaster Summer Award was organised as a two-week Summer School on

the Lancaster University Campus. It focuses on personal development planning,

reflection skills, cultural awareness building and learning about the history of the

Northwest of England. The event was coordinated by Lancaster India Centre and its

director Dr Paul Devadoss

Professor Steve Bradley, said: "It is absolutely essential that students based at our

overseas partner institutions have access to all Lancaster University facilities, and

get a chance to bond with their University colleagues from the Lancaster campus.

The Lancaster Summer Award has been specifically developed for our partner

institutions and it has been a fantastic experience for all of us."

The students from India were engaged in various activities framed within personal

development planning techniques. The programme was designed by the three

Lancaster University faculties LUMS, FASS and FST, together with the Centre for

Enterprise, Employability and Careers and Lancaster University Volunteering Unit.

SUMMER SCHOOL AT GDGWI

Goenka Students are invited to attend two-weeks of summer school at Lancaster University to experience English culture and participate in a variety of out-of-class activities

designed to help them develop a broad set of leadership and personal skills.

Genuine leadership abilities are developed beyond the confines of the classroom. The Lancaster Award encourages Lancaster University students to engage in a variety of

activities outside their programme of study, to give them an opportunity to develop their potential as leaders and as involved and informed members of the community keen to

contribute to its growth and development.

The special Lancaster Summer Awardoffers a two-week summer school in Lancaster for the university’s students at the Goenka campus. The Lancaster Summer Award

website defines the programme’s focus on “personal development, planning reflection skills, culture awareness building and learning about the history of the Northwest of

England”. The event is coordinated by the Lancaster India Centre and its Director Paul Devadoss.

Lancaster University underlines the importance of this initiative, recognizing that it is essential and highly beneficial for students at overseas campuses to work closely with their

peers and community seniors from the Lancaster campus.

The 2011 programme was designed by the three Lancaster University faculties, LUMS, FASS, and FST, together with the Centre for Enterprise, Employability and Careers and

Lancaster University Volunteering Unit. The programme offered students a broad spectrum of opportunities – they interacted with representatives from 2 of the ‘big 4’ giants –

KPMG and PWC – and also with students from a high school, using the opportunity to learn more about the English culture.

A Goenka student reported on the highly rewarding experience: “The Summer School was a novel experience. It provided everything I lacked in terms of personal development at

this stage of my career, such as presentation skills, portraying the best you have, a sense of social responsibility and also the feeling of being prepared for what the future is

expected to hold. Coming into a new cultural environment with people from all walks of life and from all parts of the world seemed challenging. I had doubts whether I would be

able to actually learn anything from this experience at the individual level. Interaction with great faculty was a delight as I experienced mentoring and refinement through being

here. As I now evaluate the experience, I can feel a lot more confident and aware of myself, which I consider as a great achievement.”

The CSR society with its goal of churning out socially responsible, emphatic leaders has undertaken social Initiatives in the area of education of

marginalized children, women empowerment, health awareness and care for senior citizens in old age homes. The Society’s flagship programme

began in January this year when the Khaika Village School was adopted by GDGWI. Students now undertake regular teaching at the school as well as

organize other enjoyable events for the children. Another women empowerment programme, taken up at Chandranagar, with the help of NGO ‘Sudha-

the Nectar’ is also sensitizing the group of involved students who periodically report an increase in their self-awareness and satisfaction. In the fields

of health awareness, the Society has elicited the support of Medanta- The Medicity and Red Cross Blood bank to organize health check up camps and

blood donation camps. We are also in the process of catalyzing a programme to render our support for senior citizens at old age homes through Help

Age India.

By involving students in the wider world, where they will eventually live and work, and sensitizing them to societal needs, SDC enables GDGWI to offer

an unparalleled education for strong future leaders rather than simply manufacturing students with a good corporate background.

CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

33

The CEO Club:

E-Cell:

CSR Society:

The Chief Executive Officers Club of GDGWI is engaged to present a premier forum for the exchange of ideas on business and management issues

An Entrepreneurial Cell (E-Cell) is a staff- student body with an aim of promoting Entrepreneurial Education and Skills among students. NEN works closely with the GDGWI students and helps in running of the cell.

The CSR Society was formulated to promote corporate social responsibility. The society addresses hybrid issues including undertaking of independent initiatives that reflect economic, environmental and social needs.

Several other Clubs exist like the Sports Club and Adventura Club for the outside enthusiast, the Young Manager's Club for the Undergraduate students and the Special Interest Clubs ( Photography, Dance and Theater) which hone the students artistic and creative side.

STUDENT DEVELOPMENT CENTRE With the idea of holistic student development as the foundation stone, the institute had established a Student Development

Centre (SDC). The SDC-GDGWI provides self-developmental support to all students through Clubs and Forums. Club activities

broaden student experiences. This multiplicity of options allows students to contribute to the college community and

constructively evolve their own campus life.
