• Economic – the trade roads were built; global companies started their functions; global economy and finance system have been created.

• Political – tribes transformed to peoples, nations and states formed, after that regional unions and finally international authorities of governance.

• Geographical – the great migration of peoples started, new lands were founded, empires created.

• Ideological – unified social ideas spread on huge territories

• Informational – the speech and writing were created, after that literature, finally massmedia and Internet

Technologies – the main source for development

• 17th century – scientific revolution – scientific knowledge was applied and machines were invented.

• 18th century – the beginning of the industrial revolution.

• 19th century - intensive application of science in the material production.

• 20th century – inventing the computer and its using, replacing some functions of the machines

• 21th century – expansion and development of the functions of technology. Technology acquires also some social characteristics - new technologies can reproduce biological and mental functions.

• Increased integration has brought a higher volume of trade. This means more goods and services for most of the world.

• Increased GDPs and overall standard of living for those that participate

1. China and India are important cases but they don’t represent “the world.”

2. Need to ask what life would be like in China, India and other globalizers without reforms.

3. Rich countries HAVE grown richer, and most of the VERY POOR countries HAVE stayed poor. Question is WHY.

countries—forced to work for cheap wages and in poor working conditions e.g. China, India. Rights of workers ignored.

5. Cheap foreign competition and off-shore production of manufacturing hurts American workers e.g. Pillowtex.

• There is no world government, so who regulates and controls the process? Mostly UN agencies, but they require the compliance of all member states, and the UN does not make law.

• Do states ever put the global priority ahead of their own? Plus, we have rich, strong states, and poor weak ones.

Is This Globalization?

Globalization and its impact on India

Cultural changes Access to television grew from 10% of the urban

population (1991) to 75 % of the urban population (1999).

Foreign movies became widely available for the first time and have acted as a catalyst in bulldozing the cultural boundaries.

Indian youths leaving education in mid-way and joining MNC’s.

There has been increase in the violence, particularly against women.

Cont…. Extension of internet facilities even to rural areas.

In place of old cinema halls, multiplex theatre are coming up.

Old restaurants are now replaces by Mc. Donald’s. Scientific and technological innovations have made life

quite comfortable and enjoyable. More scandals and scams compared to pre-

globalization era. In India, land-line or basic phone was a prestige

symbol few years back but now you find people riding bicycle with a mobile in hand, talking or listening music.

Economical changes

Greater employment opportunities for the masses. The rupee has gained on the foreign currencies. A country of savers has become spenders.

THE BRIGHTER SIDE OF GLOBALIZATION

• The rate of growth of the GDP of India has been on

the increase from 5.6% during 1980-90 to 7 % in the 1993-2001 period. In the last few years, the annual growth rate of the GDP was impressive at 7.5% (2003-04), 8.5% (2004-05), 9%(2005-06), 9.2% (2006-07), 4.7% (2013).

• Current GDP of India is 5.6% (2014).

THE DARKER SIDE OF GLOBALIZATION

• Industrialisation did not take place as per expectation.• Share of agriculture in the GDP went down drastically

to 24 percent and further to 14 % in 2014.• The number of rural landless families increased from

35% in 1987 to 45% in 1999,Further to 55 % in 2005.• Our progress in education has been slow and

superficial, without depth and quality, to compete the international standards.

• People depending on agriculture in India is about 70% where as the same for U.K. is 2% and U.S. is 2%.

My opinion about globalization

This globalization is completely wrong, and globalization should stop, because:

In globalization only western people dominate the world the others have to follow them and their ways. Nowadays Christmas is the big holiday for most of the world, and if someone doe not say thank you is it considered rude

Also nowadays if someone wears religious clothing that person cannot get a job because the job interview requires western clothes so called professional clothes.
