INTRODUCTION-

Odisha is one of the major maritime states , offering vast scope for development of both inland ,i.e.-fresh water and brackish water & marine fisheries.

The resources of the state are:-

A. FRESH WATER-(TOTAL-6.76 LACK HA.)• TANKS AND PONDS-1.25 la. ha.

• RESERVOIRS-2.00 la. ha.

• SWAMPS, LAKES & JHEELS-1.80 la. ha.

• RIVERS AND CANALS-1.71 la. ha.

TANKS AND PONDS:-Presently there are about 106 government fish farm and a number of private farms present in the state. Out of the 106 govt. fish farms 27 are capable of seed production also.

There are about 122 fish seed production hatcheries in odisha which are capable of producing 700 million of fish seed per year. Out of these 122 ,27 are under fisheries department, 6 are under odisha pisciculture development corporation (OPDC), & 89 private.

RIVERS AND CANALS:-Mahanadi is the longest river flowing in odisha.

Except Mahanadi some other river are also flowing. Those are- brahmani, baitarani, burhabalang, salandai, sankh, ong, bansadhara, kathajodi, kolab, tel, rushikulya etc.

In form of major, medium and large reservoirs. There are around 3 major, 6 medium & 1433 minor reservoirs present in odisha.3 major:-a) Hirakud-it is present in Mahanadi in sambalpur and a water spread area of

71963 ha. b) Rangali-it is present in brahmani in denkanal and a water spread area of

28000 ha.c) Balimela- it is present in koraput and a water spread area of 19440 ha.

•ESTURIES-2.98 LAKH HA.

•BRACKICH WATER AREA-0.32 LAKH HA.

•BACK WATER AREA-0.08 LAKH HA.

Out of the total potential area of brackish water 38575 ha, 32587 ha has been found suitable for brackish water aquaculture. so far 16387 ha brackish water area has been developed of which 10174 ha has been brought under shrimp farming.

there are 14 shrimp hatcheries with an installed annual capacity of 505 millions P.L & about 73% (367 millions) of total capacity is produced every year.

Chilika lake:-It is the largest brackish water lake/lagoon in India. It is present in 3 districts in odisha-khuirdha, ganjam, &puri. Its area varies from 1165 km square to 906 km square in monsoon and dry season respectively. The lake sustains more than 1.5 lakh fishing people living in 132 villages on the shore. in chilika lake 217 sp. comprising of 147 genera, 71 families and 15 order were recorded. The commercially important fishes available in the lake are-Tenulosa ilisha, Mugil cephalus, Liza macrolepis, Lates calcarifer, Plotosus canius, Mystus gulio, Etroplus suratensis, Nematolosa nasus, etc. And among prawns Penaeus monodun, Penaeus indicus, Metapenaeus dobsoni, and among crabs Scylla serrata, Portunus pelagicus are available.

FRESH WATER PRODUCTION:-Now there are about 62167 ha of fresh water area is under scientific farming under FFDAs in 30 districts. The average fish production from these area is around 2.13 ton/ha. The average productivity of the reservoir was around 7.5 kg/ha before the reservoir fisheries policy as compared to the national 15kg/ha. But after the policy the productivity is increased to 9.3 kg/ha which is due to the continuous stocking of fingerlings.
