TYPES OF NON FINITE VERBS

•The Infinitive

•The Gerund

•The Participle

THE INFINITIVE

• A non finite verb.• Is generally preceded by ‘To’.• Is a verb which is used like a noun, adjective, or adverb• Examples:-1. The children have come to see the play.2. The Principal would like to call for a meeting.3. I would like to play with the cat.

THE PARTICIPLE

• Is a non finite verb.• Is a verb that does the work of an adjective.• It is of two types:-1. Past Participle2. Present Participle

PRESENT PARTICIPLE

• Ends in ‘-ing’.• Shows an ongoing/incomplete action.• Examples:-1. I saw a thief stealing the money.2. We can hear a dog barking.3. The swirling waves engulfed him.4. Seeing a mad dog running towards my house, I quickly bolted my door.

PAST PARTICIPLE

• Ends in ‘-ed’, ‘-d’, ‘-t’, ‘-en’, or ‘-n’.• Shows an action has been completed.• Examples:-1. Deceived by his brothers, he sought justice from the court.2. A lost opportunity never comes back.3. They left long before it started pouring.4. She cried over a broken vase.

GERUND• Is a non finite verb.• Ends in ‘-ing’.• Works like a noun.• Examples:-1. The boys are tired of running.2. We enjoy eating ice-cream.3. The child loves watching television.4. Dying is better than lying.
