We, at FIDESIndia are committed to creating a

just and equitable social order and believe in the ability of the human individual

for transformation towards responsible well being

Responsible well-being recognizes obligations to others, both present and future

generations and to their quality of life. In general, the word responsible has a moral force

attached to that.

Well-being is experienced as quality of life.

It is open to the whole range of human experience;

physical, social, mental and spiritual as well as

material.

India's children....

40% of India's population is below the age of 18 years which at 400 million is the world's largest child population.

At 17 million, India is home to world's largest population of child labourers. (this is the official figure; activists claim the actual number is closer to four fold).

Less than half of India's children between the age 6 and 14 go to school.

One in every ten children is disabled in India.

Only 38% of India's children below the age of 2 years are immunized.

Almost one in every five children in India below the age of 14 suffers from diarrhea, an easily preventable disease

SITUATION OF CHILDREN IN INDIA TODAY

A child is born every 2 seconds in India

60 million children under the age of 6 exist below the poverty line

More than half of India's children are malnourished.

Almost 2 million children in India die every year before reaching their first birthday.

One in 11 dies before the fifth birthday.

7 to 8 lakh children die every year from easily preventable diseases like diarrhoea. Only 15 to 20 percent of Indian children grow to their full potential.

Sex ratio for children up to six years is 927 females per 1000 males. India has 30 percent of the world's births,

20 percent of the world's maternal deaths, and 25 percent of the world's child deaths.

EDUCATION

More than 25 million primary school-age children are not in school.

Sixty-five million children aged 6-14 years were not getting

112,000 are single teacher schools and 25,000 primary school teachers are Para teachers.

India’s state of education contributes generously to the numbers of working children. The dropout rate stands at 53% for classes I –VIII institutions in India, (Census- 2001, released in 2005)

CHILD LABOURConservative estimate of working children in India is the 2001 censusof 12.06 million Child labor estimates range from 10 million to 100 million The 1991 Census - 9.1million full-time child workers; additional 2.2 million children in part-time work

Non-governmental organizations estimate - 60 and 115 million child laborers in India the largest number anywhere in the world

The number of out-of-school workers - estimated at around 120 million children, a proxy indicator for child labor

Indian Government states : around 2 million children employed in hazardous work

WHY SUPPORTIVE EDUCATIONAL INITIATIVES? Investment in education especially primary education is one of the most important determinants of human welfare, opportunity,and economic growth.

The low earnings of poor people are partly a consequence of their low levels of skill and literacy. Better educated people adapt more easily to new technologies and have higher rates of productivity.

Sunshine/Kiran: Financial assistance to poor studentsand support to drop outs

Gurukula: Free tuition centers and personality development

programs for urban and rural children

Prateeksha: Boys Homes for poor children

NEST (Nurturing and Educating for Social Transformation): A village for orphan, semi orphan and gifted but poor children

Eco-watch: An attempt to instill concern for creation in the minds of the youth as they determine the course of action for the morrow.

CGSR- Children’s Group for Self Reliance: A venture to instill in the mind of the children a need for education and a civic sense. BALA SANGAMA – 12th February 2011- 700 children from our tuition centres, slum and village schools participated. Organized by FIDES Staff, Volunteers from academic institutions and local animators
