What is Computer? An electronic

device which is capable of receiving information (data) in a particular form and of performing a sequence of operations in accordance with a predetermined but variable set of procedural instructions (program) to produce a result in the form of information or signals.

First Generations Computers

• Used Vacuum Tubes for the electronic components.

• The Medium of internal storage was magnetic drum.

• They were quiet large and required a lot of space of Installation.

• They were very expensive.

• They were non-portable & very slow equipment.

• Fast and more powerful then any of their predecessors.

• These machines are unreliable and port to frequent hardware failures.

Page 6: Evolutions of computing

Second Generations Computers• Used Transistor

• Vacuum Tubes are replaced by transistor

• Faster and reliable than first generation computer

• Transistor are smaller, cheaper and faster

• They require less power than vacuum tubes

• Used disk storage device• Used operating system• They were more reliable and

less prompt hardware failure.• They had better portability and

generating less amount of heat.

Third Generations Computers• Transistor were replaced

by Integrated circuits.• ICs reduce the size of

computer.• The speed of the

computer was reliability were increased.

• The power consumption were reduced.

• In 2nd generation computer the size was half room size but in this generation the size was reduced.

• Powerful language were developed and also operating systems got it reduced.

 Fourth Generations Computers

• Very large scale integrated circuits were used.

• Magnetic core memories replaced semi-conductor memories.

• Powerful languages were introduced.

• In this period computers portable, very reliable and cheaper.

• These Computers were less generate negligible amount of heat.

Fifth Generations Computers• Fifth generation

Computer came into existence in 1985 and present.

• Compare to fourth generation computer storage capacity is high.

• Data processing speed was 10^-13+.

• Fifth generation computers are PARAM-10000.

• Less amount of heat in fifth generation computers.

• Improved networking concept in this generation.
