In what ways In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? COVER

MASTHEAD:I was inspired by Kerrang to make my masthead like the stencil’s which are used to spray the band’s name onto their equipment. I also had the models head covering the masthead.

I also used a similar name for my magazine. It has two syllables is catchy as it is a simple word, relating to my genre. The masthead is accompanied by a selling line which

The model is giving the reader eye-contact which entices them into the magazine and makes them feel involved. It is also a mid shot which is conventional for magazine covers.

MAIN COVER LINE:I have challenged conventions by using a decorative/grunge font for my cover line. I did this to try and create a fanzine

I was inspired by NME to make my magazine off-A4, as it will make it stand out from other magazines

I have edited my photos which is conventional as magazines want their models to look good

accompanied by a selling line which is conventional.

I liked the way Kerrang had one of their cover lines in a box, accompanied by a quote and also used this to make it of secondary importance to the main cover story.

COVER LINES:I have aligned all my cover lines on the left third as it is the part of the magazine that will be seen perspective customers when stacked on shelves in shops. If the buyer is interested in the cover lines, they will buy the magazine.

MAIN IMAGE:In keeping with the photographic rule of thirds, I positioned the model in the right hand third, making her prominent on the page. She is dressed in a stereotypically rocky way and in the same colours as the page. These colours are associated with the rock genre

I added a barcode to make my magazine look real and professional. Also, like Kerrang and NME, I have included the date and issue number in the barcode

line. I did this to try and create a fanzine feel to my magazine and this font is similar to the way cut up newspapers were used in fanzines during the 70’s.

EXPLANITORY TEXT:Similarly to Kerrang, I have made my explanatory text seem stuck on to add to the fanzine look. I decided to use a dymo style font which matched the style of my magazine but challenged conventions

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD

BY LINE:I have used a technique of Kerrang and put my by line at the top of the page in a slug

I have challenged magazine conventions by using a film strip to show some of my other photos. It also fits in with my artist as she talks about “bringing the drama back into music”. I also edited the photographs in a stylised way

DROP CAP:It is a common convention in all magazines to use a drop cap for the first letter of your article.

SLUG:It is also a common convention to use a slug so the editor knows what section of the magazine the article is from.

LANGUAGE:I have followed conventions of music magazines of my target audience by using informal language and swearing. I have challenged convention however by having a bias writer. Like photographs in a stylised way

by adding a yellow tint and blurring the background around the model.

ARTICLE TITLE:To add continuity to my magazine, I have used the same font as the cover. As it is a decorative font, this contrasts with conventions of using a plain sans serif font.

LEADING TEXT:I have also used the same font as used for explanatory text on my cover to add continuity and create brand identity, however this challenges conventions as it is decorative.

BODY TEXT:I have put my text in boxes on top of an image to continue my mock fanzine style. I liked the way NME had one page taken up by the image and the other by the text.

PAGE NUMBER:I have followed conventions by having the page number and logo in the bottom corner of the page. I have also followed convention by only putting it in the right hand corner with the text.

PULL QUOTE:Like both NME and Kerrang, I have emphasised by pull quotes yet embedded them in the text.

ANCHOR:Both NME and Kerrang use a red box for their anchor. I have included information about the band, similarly to Kerrang.

by having a bias writer. Like NME I used direct address

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? TABLE OF CONTENTS

MASTHEAD:In accordance with conventions, I have included my masthead at the top of my table of contents to continue brand identity.

IMAGES:Like Kerrang I have included a collage I have used a collage of images next to the contents that show some of the elements. However, I have challenged convention by editing my images by using brightness and

CONTENTS:I have used conventional editorial pillars that summaries all my articles. I have used less than average magazines as I have a large amount of stories per pillar instead.

I have unconventionally used a background image for my table of contents instead of a base colour as I thought it contrast to make the images more artistic.

I have tried to use different shot types and angles to make them all unique.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR:I wanted to follow the convention of having a letter from the editor on the contents page to provide a connection between the magazine and the reader.

instead of a base colour as I thought it would look more interesting. It is the same background as my cover as I wanted to create continuity from the cover through the magazine. This is used in magazines but not usually to this extent.
