Enterprise Social Software is essentially putting consumer facing technology behind the firewall.

Why Social vs. Existing Tools?

• Because traditional corporate communication tools: – Exclude as a primary mission – Ignore business systems – Always seem to be “a step behind”

• A better model would be to:

– Share ideas and experiences more readily – Leverage existing applications – Empower users to get things done NOW

• If Twitter can help free a student from a 3rd world

prison… • Why does it take 2 weeks to get a team working on a

project?

Social Technologies Are Taking Hold

• The public world has voted

– Facebook

• 661 million users (4/1/11)

• 150 million mobile users

• Average user spends 13.3 hours per month on the site

– Twitter

• Over 175 million registered users

• 65 million tweets per day (750 per second)

Why Would Social Software Fail?

• It’s rarely a technology problem

• Depending on user profiles, changes in behavior take time

• Early on, use cases are critical

• You will have doubters internally – “It’s fluffware” – “We’re not ready for people to talk like that” – “Who cares where you went to lunch?”

Making the Social Leap

• Wrap a consumer experience in a business suit

• Your leaders create a wake

• Tighter security than public tools

• Integration with existing business systems

Data is Cheap, Context is King

• Where are the stock quotes?

• Data is everywhere, but its meaning is elusive

• Context is scattered in emails, conference calls, not-shared conversations

• People will pay attention to context, not raw data

Systems + Social = Mythical “Business Value”

• Use your social platform to unlock system data and business events – “Deal X has closed for $50,000” (SFA application)

– “Valve XR-47 failure” (Field Maintenance app)

• Allow users to put that data into context – “We won it by using…“

– “We will have it fixed by…”

• Real-time knowledge and wisdom in one place
