EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCEis the ability or capacity or skill of a person to perceive, assess and manage the emotions of one’s self, of others and of the groups.

Term emotional intelligence is coined by SALOVEY & MAYER (1990)

DANIEL GOLEMAN

According to Salovey and Mayeremotional intelligence is a form of social intelligence that involves the ability to monitor one’s own and others’ feelings and emotions, to discriminate among them, and use this information to guide one’s thinking and action.

Daniel Goleman Emotional Intelligence is a master aptitude, a capacity that profoundly affects all other abilities, either facilitating or interfering with them.

Mayer and Salovey defines Emotional Intelligence as the capacity to understand emotional information and reason with emotions.They divide Emotional Intelligence abilities into four areas – in their four branch model.

Goleman’s five emotional competencies

•Ability to identify and name one’s emotional state and to understand the link between emotions, thought and action.•The capacity to manage one’s emotional state – to control emotions or to shift undesirable emotional states to more adequate ones.•The ability to enter into emotional states associated with a drive to achieve and be successful.•The capacity to read, be sensitize, and influence other people’s emotions.•The ability to enter and sustain satisfactory interpersonal relationships.

COMPONENTS OF EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE

Self awarenessKnowing what we are feeling in this moment, and using those preferences to guide our decision making; having a realistic assessment of our own abilities and a well grounded sense of self confidence.

Self regulation Handling our emotions so that they facilitate rather than interfere with the task.

Self motivationUsing our deepest preferences to move and guide us towards our goals, to help us to take initiative and strive to improve and to persevere in the face of set backs and frustrations.

Empathy Sensing what people are feeling, being able to take their perspective and cultivating rapport and attunement with a broad diversity of people.

Social skillsHandling emotions in relationships well and accurately reading social situations and network; interacting smoothly; using their skills to persuade and lead, negotiate and settle disputes, for cooperation and team work.
