WHY:

• Neighborhoods such as these

have high concentration of

car- ownership, wide roads

which tends dominate the

landscape.

• Lack of pedestrian and

cycling infrastructure results

in less people on the streets

and therefore increase in

issues of safety and security

Overall project:

The HSR NIP- location An Accessibility Project for Indiranagar Metro Station

TOWARDS A WALKABLE AND SUSTAINABLE BENGALURU

Greater Mumbai DPEffects of Current Parking Norms (DP 1991)

High provision of parking supply and additional exemptions to support more supply

Incentives to support excess of parking supply irrespective of the congestion

From only minimum parking mind set to - introducing maximum cap in TOD areas

Integrated approach of on-street parking management with off-street parking

Effective usage of parking lots round the clock through mixed use and common pool

Do not allow multi storied parking lots in immediate surroundings of the station

Use parking as a tool to favour mass public transit and enhance street life

Parking affects accessibility to public transit & indirectly influence who lives in TOD

Existing Policy Situation

Proposed Approach For Parking Policy Supporting TOD

Page 42: EMBARQ

Overall project:

The HSR NIP- location An Accessibility Project for Indiranagar Metro Station

TOWARDS A WALKABLE AND SUSTAINABLE BENGALURU

Greater Mumbai DPNeed to Reduce Parking in Station Areas

Reduce Parking Requirement – by effective round the clock shared usage of parking in

Mixed Uses;

Reducing Parking based on nearness to Mass Public Transit;

Reduction of excess of parking to support reducing cost escalation of housing due to

parking;

Controlling of parking at ground floors of plots to enhance street life

Pedestrian and NMT oriented design

Easy access to transit nodes

Mixed use and high density around sector center.

Concept of „high street‟

Water networks retained

Originals routes connecting villages are integrated

with the new design. Thus establishing

connections with the old and the new.

Equitable design – equal access to all social

classes and various physical typologies

Sector design „part‟ of the master plan design and

not an „isolated‟ entity.

NRDAParticipation Process: Learning

Long term partnerships is essential to –

together develop a system which the agency

can take further

Continuous persuasion on addressing

concerns is key

Technical expertise incorporating, locally

informed contextual solutions works better

Aim to change of mind set from standard

approaches to sustainable principles

Page 50: EMBARQ

Aim to change the mind set from vehicular oriented accessibility to people oriented;

There is need to mandate for local access plans in the TCP Acts. But „bottom up‟

efforts are effective in influencing change;

Ward plans are a good tool for implementation of Local Accessibility plans, but

preparing local level plans alone does not ensure better accessibility – commitment

to sustainability principles is key

Public Participation is critical to develop successful plans;

Elected representatives from wards need to be „Champions‟ for success of such

projects;

EMBARQ India is bringing out the Safe Access Manual in 2014.

Look forward to your comments…
