Education:
How Bad Do
You Want It? Education is an impor-tant component of suc-cess and living a quality
life in American society. Many people, es-pecially youth and young adults, constantly make statements about their future plans for getting an education. We hear students say all of the time “ I am going to college”. Un-fortunately saying I am going to college and actually going are very different things. Also getting into college and going to college are not the same. Finally, being accepted into a college and stepping onto a college campus do not equate to “going” to college. Indi-viduals and families must understand what getting a real education is about and deter-mine if they want to put in the work and ef-fort that is required. So, “how bad do you want an education?”. Here is a checklist of things that help a person to be successful in college. See if you or your child are ready.
1. Select a major or career path that you
enjoy and feel you will work hard at.
2. Select a college based on how it meets
your needs (financial, location, major)

not because your friends are going there.
3. Successful students attend classes
regularly and get there on time.
4. Successful students are attentive in
class; not talking to their friends or on
their cell phones.
5. Know your professors, visit them during
office hours, ask them questions; show
you are interested in learning.
6. Do your homework and be prepared for
class. Stay ahead of the schedule.
7. Study for tests early. Do not get in the
habit of partying and then cramming for
tests and exams the night before.
8. Establish study groups; work with stu-
dents who are concerned about their
education.
9. Set realistic goals. If you have to work
be careful how you plan your class
schedule and other activities. Working
at a job does not mean you do not have
to do your school work.
10. Look for opportunities to get experience,
internships, summer jobs, etc. Never
give up if it’s what you really want.

Become a Better Person Through Acts of Kindness
What’s your passion? So many individuals are trying to find their pur-
pose. So many live a life without ever finding their real passion; others
find their passion as more of a hobby that has its benefits-a pay check.
How many actually live their passion and don’t have to wonder if the
mark was ever reached? Have you reached your mark? If you haven’t,
what are you doing to work towards it?
It is not who is right, but what is right, that is important……..You can either find your
passion and live it or help someone else reach theirs’. What’s the last thing that you
did that was not for you? What’s the last thing you did that benefited someone
else? Maybe you let someone go before you in the grocery line who had five items as
opposed to your 10 items; or you allowed a car into your lane during heavy traffic.
Small things do make a big difference.
There are lots of self-help books that promote self confidence, better ways to handle
idiot bosses, how to handle the child that does not meet the standards that you set.
But there isn’t much around just to promote the act of giving. Giving because you
can; giving because it can change someone else’s outcome. Giving of yourself
without thinking how the other person is going to use your act of kindness. We need
to stop thinking about what we get from it and start wondering what can the other
person get out of my (your) act of kindness? Your act of kindness can cause a con-
tagious system of events. Paying it forward. Your act of kindness can be towards a
person, organization, and community involvement. What are you doing to make life
better for someone else: a friend, a neighbor, a co-worker, a stranger, a community?
Try it…… what do you have to lose?
WORDS OF
WISDOM
Those who are always
complaining about
their circumstances
find that success con-
tinually eludes them.
As do those who
speak ill of others or
who make excuses for
own their failures.
As long as we are hu-
man, we are bound to
make mistakes. We
all fall prey to flawed
beliefs and views.
What distinguishes a
forward-looking per-
son from an intransi-
gent one, a virtuous
person from a dishon-
est one, however, is
whether one can can-
didly admit to one's
mistakes and take
bold steps to redress
them.

WRITE THE
VISION
And the Lord answered
me, and said, Write the
vision, and make it plain
upon the tables, that he
may run that readeth it.
For the vision is yet for
an appointed time, but at
the end it shall speak, and
not lie; though it tarry,
wait for it; because it will
surely come….

PARENTS YOU ARE NEEDED
The College Prep session format has changed this year. In re-

parents and students, there will be concurrent parent and stu-

the higher education arena. The session will provide informa-

Although the Ed’s World Living Legacy Scholarship closes on May 1st of every year, there are still other scholarships that can be found. Any student who is planning to attend an insti-tution of higher learning should search for financial assistance. This can in-clude community colleges, 4-year colleges and univer-sities, and trade schools.
If you know of a student who is a high school senior encourage them to periodi-cally review our Facebook page as we continuous post other scholarships and financial resources.
As we continue to enhance the services and programs of
the organization, we are working to ensure that you can
easily reach us. We have changed our email address to
[email protected]. We are partnering with Constant Con-
tact to distribute our electronic newsletter on a monthly
basis so that your have current and ongoing information
about what we are doing. We are asking that you go into
the website or on Facebook and send us
your e-mail address. Finally we will have
a new telephone number soon. We will
make sure to highlight it in all of our cor-
respondence so you can note the
change.
If you have more suggestions about ways
we can keep you in the loop and better reach out to youth
and young adults, please let us know. Striving to be the
best we can be!!
