What is literacy
• Ability to read and write
What is Information Literacy?
• Ability to recognise the value of information and use to make informed choices, either in your personal life or professional life
Therefore, an information literate person should have:
• Library Skills -subject categories-broader, narrower terms, synonyms
• Computer Skills-navigate library resources -navigate the internet (search engines e.g. scirus)
5 Steps of IL
• Recognise the need for information• Critically think about the topic• Read and make notes• Define keywords (mind mapping; select
broader or narrower terms; identify different spellings)• Find (search and locate ) the information
Finding tools:
• Library catalogue (find books and journals) e.g. Smartsearch• Databases (find journal and newspaper
articles)•Web (use search engines like Google
scholar and Scirus)
Evaluate the information
• facts vs opinion
• authority of information
• publishers reputation

Legal implications
