Introduction• Bharti Foundation

– Philanthropic arm of Bharti Group Companies.

– Set up to help underprivileged children and young people of our country realize their potential.

• Satya Bharti School Program– Flagship program of Bharti Foundation.

– It aims to deliver free quality education to underprivileged children, with special focus on the girl child across rural India.

– Goal to establish 500 Primary and 50 Senior Schools reaching out to over 200,000 students

• Present Operational Status– Number of Schools Operational : 236

– States of Operation: Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh & Tamil Nadu

– Number of Students Enrolled: 29,000+

• Geographical Location:– Sultangarh is located at 40 km from the NH-8– The village comes under Khundroth Panchayat.– Total House Hold – 33– Total Population of Village - 200– The village declared Below Poverty Line village

by State Govt. on efforts of Bharti Foundation and today each family has a BPL Card.

- Satya Bharti Govt. Primary School is the only School in the Village.

- Most of the population is migratory in nature and they are working as a Snake Charmers.

- Transportation/ communication is not existing in village .

- The nearest market for village is Mandhan which is approx. 4-5 km form the village

- Hand pump is only the source of water but most of the time it does not work so that they have to fetch the water from sources at a distance of 1-2km.

- Most of the families live either in tents and huts.

About the Community

Snake Charmers (Sapera)

• Cultural Background:– Majority of the population belongs to

Hindu community -Nath Community (Snake Charmer)

– Dominant Cast in Village is Sapera (Snake Charmer)

– The community earn their bread & butter by begging & snakes Shows

– The dressing style of community is long Kurta & Dhoti for men and women dressing style is Ghagra & Odhni.

– The community does not believe in family planning

– The community is migratory in nature– They are the followers of Goga ji

• There are lots of problem in

the village but illiteracy is one

of the major problem.

• No body is able to write their

name and they are using the

thumb impression while

signing any documents.

We ‘Felt’:

Women comprise a major section of the illiterate

• The community is nomadic in nature, hence, there are immigrants and emigrants on a frequent basis. They don't reside any where for a long time. Therefore the condition of hygiene and sanitation is very poor.

• Illiteracy and ignorance is found as the main cause.

• We decided to make a remarkable change to initiate step against illiteracy, in this community by counselling individuals, groups along with the nukad natakplanned by them.

We ‘Imagined’:

We launched a signature drive to initiate the move towards promoting literacy

• Organized a meeting with

community people to make them

understand about the initiative of

Satya Bharti School.

• Organized the rally against

illiteracy in community.

• Make them aware about

importance of Education.

• Daily we held classes for the

community and educated them in

small groups.

• Conducted Street play in different

location of community on

importance of Education.

We ‘Did’:

Conducting the community walk through & role play

• More than 50 community people are able

to write their name in Hindi.

• Make community people literate.

• People understand the importance of

education and its benefits in their life.

• They feel self dependent and confident.

• They are more curious to learn new

things, and they want to make their

children educated.

• Understood the felt need of community and the steps involved in resolving the problem gave us the confidence in catering to the main needs of the community

• We felt proud to be a part of this campaign and become the change agents in the community.

• Staff members gained the confidence to deal with community problems which is totally different from daily class room teaching.

• They are curious to do such activity in near future and willing to do something different from their daily routine work.

Experience of Community Members & Teachers:

• It was a unique experience for the community. Never before had they picked up the

courage to write. Today more than 50 people have learnt to write their names and

more will learn through this movement.

• “ We were illiterate but now we are confident to read a few lines and even the price list in

shops….we can read prices and list of items in the shops in Mandhan Market…..we will

continue to learn more in the days to come…we are thankful to Bharti Foundation School

at Sultangarh”

The Road Ahead…..(in the next 3 months)

• We will be in touch with community people and adopt the policy of each one teach one.

• We will monitor their progress on weekly basis and call them in Parents Teachers

meeting so that we can share experiences with each other.

• We will try to identify other community problem and prepare the action plan for the

same.
