Welcome to City!
Who studies at City?
• Around 13,000 students from all over the world – 1500 on Engineering and Technology related subjects – Around 300 on Electrical & Electronics Engineering (EEE)
subjects • Gender of students: 22% Female and 78% Male • Status of students: 60% UK, 11% EU and 28% Overseas • All ages – majority of undergraduates aged 18 - 30 • All cultural backgrounds and walks of life
What is an Engineer?
• someone who fixes your car, your house electrics or boiler? • someone who ‘does engineering’ ? • an ‘applied scientist’?
The Engineering Council says: “engineering is the practice of creating and sustaining services,
systems, devices, machines, structures, processes and products to improve the quality of life; getting things done more effectively and efficiently”
What is an Engineer? • Almost everything around you is there because of an engineer
– If an engineer didn’t design it, then an engineer made it fit-for-purpose!
• Engineers make things work – We are more interested in ‘how it works’ than ‘why is it so’ – We exploit scientific knowledge to achieve goals – We make decisions based on incomplete information

Industrial Placement
Student: Amardeep Course: Computer System Engineering
Company: BBC / Siemens (Maidenhead) Job Title: Junior Software Developer Role: Developing Streaming software for BBC website (single most accessed website outside of USA).
Skills acquired: Detailed knowledge of Microsoft.Net technology. Comments: “I am currently in talks with a company about the video conferencing system that I developed for my final year project. I have allowed them to license my product”.
Industrial Placement
Students: Gavin & Abi Course: Computer System Engineering Job Title: Support tester Role: Functional software testing. Skills acquired: Detailed knowledge of Java and software testing procedures.
Accenture provides a $4000 training budget for each placement student. Both students are now professionally certified by Sun Micro-systems.
Both students have worked with a number of large companies in both the UK & Spain.
Industrial Placement
Student: Homayoun Course: Computer System Engineering Job Title: Support Engineer Role: Maintaining computer servers Skills acquired: Practical experience of Unix OS, Server Technology, SQL data bases, PHP and Java Comments:
Strong links with Coulomb, who now employ two City University graduates, and has just employed their forth placement student from City University.
Homayoun completed an industrially-linked final-year project
So how do I get here? Typical offers • ‘A’/‘AS’ level: 340 UCAS tariff points, typically AAB (BEng), or 360 UCAS
tariff points, typically AAA (MEng), ‘A’ level maths and physics required with a minimum of grade B in ‘A’ level maths
• BTEC: DDD in ND in a relevant subject, including D in Further Maths (BEng)

Funding
The Lord Mayor of London Scholarships for Academic Excellence The Scholarship amount for UK and EU students starting an undergraduate course at City in September 2013 ranges from
• up to £3,000 per year for those achieving AAB (or equivalent) .
• up to £2,000 per year for students achieving grades ABB at 'A' level (or equivalent) to
As a graduate, you will have gained…
a solid grounding in the principles and applications of Electronic,
Computer Systems, Telecommunications or
Biomedical Engineering and the role of engineering businesses in
a sustainable world;
