Welcome to the School of Geography (cont.)

Environmental scientists are trainedas multi-skilled graduates, able toinvestigate problems and createsolutions. It can be seen as both abroad BSc degree and as specificpreparation for work in theenvironmental sector.

Studying geography and environmentalscience in LondonLondon is one of the world’spremier global cities. It is the centre of British politics, business, finance and the media. It’s also a fascinating place inwhich to study geography andenvironmental science.

London is home to some of the UK’s wealthiest and mostimpoverished populations, creating a huge disparity betweenrich and poor. This is reflected inour location: Queen Mary’s MileEnd campus is very close to boththe financial districts of the Cityand Canary Wharf, as well assome of the most deprived inner-city communities. This offers agreat opportunity to contextualisethe study of economic geography, development and inequality.

It’s not all theoretical though. There are opportunities for you toput your learning into practice, forexample by working with localcommunity organisations in theEast End. In the past studentshave worked with local charitiesand community groups on issuessuch as bullying and racism inschools, the impact of the 2012Olympics and the campaign for a living wage.

Environmental concerns areparticularly acute in an urbanenvironment, covering issuessuch as widespread land and riverpollution, the lasting legacy ofindustry on the land, and themassive challenge of effectivewaste disposal. You are also ableto witness first-hand the effects ofhuman action (and inaction) andlearn about developing effectivestrategies to cope with climatechange, one of the biggestchallenges of the Twenty-FirstCentury.

London is home to some greatresources for geographers. One of our first year modules includesa field trip to the RoyalGeographical Society in SouthKensington to hear about thehistory and contemporary work of the organisation and see aselection of images and objectsfrom its extensive archivecollection. You will also haveaccess to both the British Libraryand Senate House Library, as wellas excellent museums such asthe Natural History Museum.

Teaching, learningand support atQueen Mary Teaching and learning methodsare diverse, ranging from lecturesand seminars through to a rangeof practical work, includinglaboratory and field-based study. At Queen Mary we place a tutorialsystem at the heart of ourteaching: in addition to lecturesand seminars, you will meetregularly in small groups with a

personal academic tutor and on aone-to-one basis in the final year.

We have recently spent over £2.2mupgrading and extending ourlaboratory facilities, which havebeen designed specifically to cater for physical geography andenvironmental science teachingand research.

Fieldwork Fieldwork is central to all ourdegree programmes. It is anessential and enjoyable learningexperience which helps to fostergroup identity and provides aunique opportunity to learn notonly exciting techniques but arange of transferable skills, fromproject planning to teamwork.

Fieldwork takes place in all threeyears at locations in both the UKand abroad. Destinations currentlyinclude Belfast, Dublin, Durham,Las Vegas, Los Angeles andMumbai for those specialising inBA programmes, and Dorset,Somerset, Scotland and Floridafor BSc students. We also workclosely with local communitygroups and make use of London’sdiverse landscapes, areas andfacilities for fieldwork exercises.
