DESCRIPTION
Daktari Bush School & Wildlife Orphanage is an educational animal reserve located near the town of Hoedspruit in Limpopo Province, South Africa. Every Monday morning we welcome a new group of 8-10 underprivileged children from neighbouring communities who stay with us full board for 5 days. Over the course of the week the children receive our structured syllabus covering subjects from conservation, environment and pollution to social talks on drugs, alcohol, sex education and how to make South Africa a better place. All of the teaching is delivered by volunteers from all over the world who pay to experience Daktari and all it has to offer, as a registered NGO the majority of our funding is generated through our volunteers and we could not operate without their help. The Daktari reserve itself is home to a variety of rescued birds, animals and reptiles all of which are used to educate and inspire the children and volunteers who stay with us.

Painting the kids’ dorm!
In early July a team of talented volunteers decided to brighten up the kid’s dormitory with some great painting. A special thanks to Berndt for coordinating the project!
It’s a baby girl…
Miriam, one of our lovely staff members, gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. Michele’s idea was to name her Chanel, Miriam really liked it and so the name stuck!
Are you up to date with all our Daktari News bulletins reported live from camp by the children in less than 60 seconds?

DAKTARI STREET PARTY!
No one throws a party like a Daktari Street Party…Not only did we entertain all our bushveld neighbours and friends with a bush bar, braai and music, but we also raised over R 5000!
It was a great evening; special thanks to everyone who came along and to all the volunteers who helped out

Remembering Princess Maya
Welcoming Princess Leia
Our beloved Princess Maya sadly passed away on the 20th July 2013. She went to sleep for the last time with her mate King Kong and her favourite hot water bottle. She will be missed greatly but fondly remembered forever. xxx
After Princess Maya died King Kong was extremely depressed and lonely. The volunteers kept him company as much as possible but we realised it was time to find him a new mate. Princess Leia cheered him up and now they are very happy
Spikey’sSpecialVisit…
I’m Spikey the Cape Porcupine, I visit the Daktari lapa most evenings. One night I decided
to bring along my two small babies! The volunteers were very excited and happy to meet them, I was happy for the break, it is hard work
with twins!

Holy Family Orphanage
During the school holidays we had a week where we couldn’t take any children from the village schools, so we decided to give the opportunity to all the grade 8 children at the Holy Family Orphanage located nearby.
A lot of the younger children were so upset about being too young to come to Daktari that we organised a day trip for them as well. They had great fun seeing all the animals and the volunteers loved showing them all around. It was a great day spent with all the wonderful children and staff.
Holy Family care for vulnerable children aged from 0-18 years, they are constantly at their full capacity of 75 children.

A wonderful extract below from Ashandy’s poem, which she will be performing on South African Heritage Day.
“My country is for loveSo say it’s valleysWhere ancient rivers flowThe full circle of lifeUnder the proud eyes of birdsAdoring the sky”
“My country is for peaceSo say the veldWhere reptiles caress its surfaceWith elegant motionsGlittering in their pride”
