Costumes and Props Planning

Costumes...Only two characters are featured within our film ‘Delirium’; Adam and The psychiatrist. This allows us to focus on using costumes in order to portray certain themes and aspects to the audience.

In order to understand the usual appearance and costumes of a psychiatrist, I looked at ‘Silver Linings’. Due to the strong themes surrounding mental health, i feel that the comparison between ‘Delirium’ and ‘Silver Linings’ is appropriate. Within this film, The psychiatrist conveys a smart and authoritative figure through the use of body language and costume. A suit jacket, shirt, jumper AND LINEN TROUSERS ARE WORN BY THE psychiatrist. tHIS IS NOT TYPICAL AS MOST psychiatristS ARE SEEN WEARING SUITS THAT CONVEY A VERY SMART AND PROFESSIONAL LOOK. HOWEVER, it maintains the smart effect only with a little more of a casual appearance.

Similarly, this theme is reflected within ‘ Hector and the Search for Happiness’.Hector, the psychiatrist, is presented wearing a wool cardigan, shirt, tie and glasses. Although this is too a casual version of the typical professional appearance, I would like our psychiatrist in ‘Delirium’ to be more casual in order to emphasize the juxtaposition of him and the average psychiatrist. .

In order to retrieve the effect of a corrupt persona, We have decided to distort the traditional smart and professional look into a more casual version.

By transforming this smart look into a casual one, we are reflecting the persona of The psychiatrist. Due to the lack of professionalism associated with this character’s costume, The psychiatrist’s unrighteous Behavior is suggested to the audience before any corrupt events begin.

Although certain elements of this outfit portray a smart effect, We have lacked professionalism with a casual pair of converse as well as skinny jeans in order to eliminate any associations regarding the psychiatrist being the authoritative and professional figure within our teaser trailer therefore implying to the audience of his deceitful persona. As well as this, every garment is black except for the white shirt, which is hidden by the black jumper. This clearly insinuates the evil and corrupt persona of the psychiatrist.. The fact that the white shirt is hidden behind the black jumper implies that the psychiatrist’s purity is concealed by the evil.

The psychiatrist

“Black is all colours, totally absorbed. The psychological implications of that are considerable. It creates protective barriers, as it absorbs all the energy coming towards you, and it enshrouds the personality. Black is essentially an absence of light, since no wavelengths are reflected and it can, therefore be menacing”.

Adam field, being a neutral 24 year old male, will be seen wearing a range of plain and logo t-shirts in order to portray a youthful effect.

In order to increase the mystery within our teaser trailer, we wanted to keep Adam’s appearance simple in order to allow the audience as little insight as possible. Restricting the audience from understanding Adam’s personality and lifestyle will keep the audience guessing, therefore increasing the thrill.

A range of shirts are needed due to the fact that we are planning to complete a time-Lapse of still images in order to reflect Adam taking his prescribed pills every day. The use of different shirts, we insinuate to the audience of the change in date. By breaking continuity in order to create a time-lapse it reflects a sense of distortion which will reflect the negative change in Adam’s personality as he continues to take his prescribed pills.

Adam Field

Most of the items of clothing are light coloured therefore showing a dramatic contrast between the psychiatrist and Adam’s personalities.

The colour white connotes to the audience themes of innocence and purity. This emphasises the fact that Adam was virtuous before he was perverted by the psychiatrist and his morally corrupt motives.

Props...A range of props are needed in order to create a sense of realism within our teaser trailer.

In order to identify Louis as the psychiatrist, a few props are essential. We have decided to bring in items such as reading glasses, a notepad, a pen, a clipboard and a framed picture of a dog due to the fact that these items will help the audience establish the fact that Louis is the psychiatrist as well as the fact that both him and Adam are situated in his office through the use a personal item.

In addition to this, we will position a bookshelf between the psychiatrist and Adam. Through the use of this central positioning, a slight hint will be made to the audience of the psychological themes soon to be portrayed within the teaser trailer that hold the psychiatrist and Adam together throughout the plot of the film. This is further emphasised by the specifically chosen books situated on this bookshelf. In order to create nuances regarding the deceitful behavior from the psychiatrist as well as the upcoming themes, a range of psychological books or those regarding death because of lies such as Macbeth will be positioned on the bookshelf.
