While the ratio of books to children in middle-income neighborhoods is approximately 13 books to 1 child, the ratio in low-income neighborhoods is 1 book to 300 children

Children in homes with fewer than ten books had test scores 20% - 50% lower than kids from homes with more than 100 books

Kids are reading less as they get older:  54% of 9 year olds read daily, while only

22% of 17 year olds do

The “Digital Divide” in America

In 2007,among households with incomes under $25,000, almost half have no internet access.

This compares with only 5% for those with incomes over $75,000.

To the web, to each other (Wi-fi, iPods, cell phones) They share music, photos, videos, IMs Why not books?

We need to make access to books as ubiquitous as music and other digital media

The Kindle makes this possible!
