Program DescriptionThe Computer Information Systems Networking Specialist Associate of

Applied Science Degree program is a sequence of courses designed to provide students with an understanding of the concepts, principles, and techniques required in computer information processing. Graduates are to be competent in the general areas of humanities or fine arts, social or behavioral sciences, and natural sciences or mathematics, as well as in the technical areas of computer terminology and concepts, program design and development, and computer networking. Program graduates are qualified for employment as networking specialists.

Program DescriptionThe Networking Specialist Track Program Outcomes

1. Maintain and repair personal computers, network hardware, associated peripheral equipment and software in support of WAN/LAN operations

2. Provide network technical support including but not limited to: installations, upgrades and configuration of file servers, workstations, network printers, and software

3. Perform network troubleshooting to diagnose and isolate network PC related problems as well as file servers. Install and test network operating systems softwareworkstation applications and various hardware configurations.

4. Perform network-based hardware and software repairs including, but not limited to: workstations, cabling, concentrators, hubs, routers, switches, file servers, and other related equipment

Job Employment /CareerNetwork Specialist Computer Systems Networking and Telecommunications. A program that focuses on

the design, implementation, and management of linked systems of computers, peripherals, and associated software to maximize efficiency and productivity, and that prepares individuals to function as network specialists and managers at various levels. Includes instruction in operating systems and applications; systems design and analysis; networking theory and solutions; types of networks; network management and control; network and flow optimization; security; configuring; and troubleshooting

Internet Specialist – Web Site Design Web/Multimedia Management and Webmaster. A program that prepares individuals

to develop and maintain web sites and the hosted web pages at one or a group of web sites, and to function as designated webmasters. Includes web page design and editing; information resources management; web policy

Computer Support Specialist Answer user inquiries regarding computer software or hardware operation to resolve

problems. Set up equipment for employee use, performing or ensuring proper installation of cables, operating systems, or appropriate software. Install and perform minor repairs to hardware, software, or peripheral equipment, following design or installation specifications. Read technical manuals, confer with users, or conduct computer diagnostics to investigate and resolve problems or to provide technical assistance and support.

Admission Requirements

Submit a completed application for admission and pay a $20 non-refundable application fee; Complete the COMPASS placement exam offered by MTC or submit satisfactory SAT, ACT, or

ASSET scores if taken within the past five years; Official transcripts from regionally or nationally accredited postsecondary institutions document equivalent program-level English and math coursework may be used in lieu or completing the assessment.

NOTE: Applicants without a high school diploma or the equivalent must test on the designated ATB test schedule and make acceptable scores to receive Title IV funds even if the exam is not required for the program of choice.

Submit an official copy of a high school transcript or GED® diploma transcript with test scores and all postsecondary transcripts; Applicants who have completed (C or better) a minimum of 30 semester or 45 semester hours at the degree level may submit official college transcripts in lieu of high school diploma or GED® diploma. Special Education or Attendance diplomas are not recognized for admission purposes.

Additional Program Requirements Provisional admission is granted to qualified students who do not meet the regular admission requirements of the program.

Provisionally admitted students are allowed to take developmental studies courses and/or certain occupational courses as designated in the course sequence standard.

The institution develops, implements, and publishes clearly stated policies and procedures for entry into programs on a provisional basis.

Evaluative Criteria Provisional admission to the Computer Information Systems - Networking Specialist, Diploma program is afforded those

students who do not meet program requirements but do meet provisional admission requirements. The requirements for provisional admission to the Computer Information Systems program are:

Attainment of at least 16 years of age; Achievement of minimum provisional admission scores on tests of reading, language, and math as specified in GDTAE

document Minimum Program Entrance Scores; or recommendation by program faculty and designated admissions personnel on the basis of interview and assessment of student potential; and

Completion of application and related procedures.

All Computer Information Systems program students that are initially admitted on a provisional basis must meet regular admission requirements prior to graduation.

Provisionally admitted students whose English, math, and/or reading achievement levels do not meet regular program admission requirements are required to enroll in developmental studies courses approved by the State Board of Technical and Adult Education
