Genus
Species
Domain- the largest category into which organism have
been classified,
o Archaea
o Bacteria
o Eukarya
Archaea Bacteria Eukarya
Kingdom- is the second highest taxonomic rank,
which classified the microorganism
and organism.
• Monera
• Protista
• Fungi
• Plantae
• Animalia
Monera Protista Fungi
Plantae Animalia
Phylum consist of different classes, which classified by bodies structdure;
Example:
o Acanthocephala
o Brachiopoda
o Chordata
Acanthocephala Brachiopoda Chordata
Class- have several characteristics, that can
distinguish the organism; feather, mammary
Gland, scales, etc.
o Mammalia
o Reptilia
o Actinopterygii
Mammalia Reptilia Actinopterygii
Order- is used to determine to which order
an organism belongs. What kind of food that
an organism eat and classified according to
their unique appearance
o Carnivora
o Gonorynchiformes
o Diptera
Carnivora Gonorynchiformes Diptera
Family- share so much in common, organisms of a family are
said to be related to each other.
o Drosophilidae
o Felidae
o Canidae
o Hominidae
Drosophilidae Felidae Canidae
Genus- is a way to describe the generic name for an organism. The
genus classification is very specific so there are fewer organisms within
each one
o Canis
o Felis
o Chanos
Canis Felis Chanos
Species- are as specific as you can get. It is the lowest and most strict level of
classification of living things
o Catus
o Familiaris
o Chanos
o Lupus
Catus Familiaris Chanos
Lupus
Before, organism were only grouped into eukaryotes
and prokaryotes. And now scientist came up with
three-domain system
eukaryotes prokaryotes
What is the purpose of these categories?
o We use these categories for the scientific naming of organism
o Other people from different places would use the same name for the
same organism.
On the past years how can we group the living things?
On the past years how can we group the living things?

Example:
o Felis + Catus = Felis Catus
o Canis + Familiaries= Canis Familiaries
o Canis + Lupus= Canis Lupus
Can a dog and a wolf produce
fertile offspring?
Why?
“This system of classification may change as more
information are gathered about organism found
all over the earth.”
Scientists have identified more than
1.4 million species. Tens of millions –
remain unknown
