Nature of WorkA zookeeper cleans cages, feeds animals and gives them medicine if they are sick. Zookeepers also pick up the park area help visitors that need help. Zookeepers also teach people about animals.

Working ConditionsZookeepers are required to work long hours and over 95% of the time it isn’t really glamourous. Zookeepers work in direct contact with animals and spend most of their time taking care of them and watching out for their overall health. Zookeepers work in all weather conditions. Sometimes the job is difficult due to dealing with sick and injured animals. Zookeepers are often required to work holidays and weekends.

Training and QualificationsA 2-4 year college degree is often needed to become a zookeeper. Keepers often study biology, and animal science. Keepers also need to have good math skills so they can measure food and medication properly. Good writing and speaking skills are also necessary for the job so they can take notes and speak to the public. Keepers should also have experience caring for animals. Many zookeepers start as volunteers.

salaries vary from minimum wage to $40,000. the size of the experience and education of the zookeeper will affect the earnings.

Job Outlook

Employment for zookeepers is predicted to grow more slowly than other positions. Many zookeepers are expected to have earned a college degree in a relevant field.
