CONVENTIONS Five day weather outlook, reflecting the weekly nature of the Gazette. Similarly to the Gem, the paper lists tide times, though no specific area is listed. CONVENTIONS The layout of this page seems to conform to the typical conventions of second pages of newspapers. This is clear from the use of branding (via the repeated logo in the upper left corner), the use of columns in order to display the copy (alongside a by- line for the author) and its use of a main image to correlate to a reader’s letter. Unconventionally, the main story on the Gazette’s front page is not displayed on the second page, rather it is written on Page 4. CONVENTIONS Phone numbers for public services and local politicians. INSTITIUTIONS Small advertisement for the “Wales Online App” for the paper’s parent company. This app would be useful for the audience in order to gain immediate information on stories. REPRESENTATIONS The image, taken at a canted angle, gives a positive representation of its older subjects, going against the supposed “too much negative stereotyping of older people” discussed in the heading. CONVENTIONSAround half of the second page is taken up by reader’s letters. This appears to be more common with newspapers that have a focus on local, rather than national news.

CONVENTIONSIn a quite unconventional style, the Gem has placed three articles on the second page, each of differing sizes. These articles are short, possibly to allow for as many stories to be reported as possible.

GENREThis report on the St. Illtyd Harvest Festival makes use of an informal tone of writing, using emotional language such as “outstanding” and “imaginative”, alongside exclamatory sentences. This can be compared to a tabloid style of writing, or a form of direct speech to the audience.

CONVENTIONS7-day tide outlook. These times were taken with the Porthcawl area in mind due to the newspaper’s circulation in the town. This suggests a strong circulation within the area.

INSTITUTIONSThe Gem lists its social media pages. The followers of these pages would be able to more easily access the paper’s stories, as well as easily share information.

However, a positive view of the church’s work is also created via the mise-en-scène of the large amounts of harvest donations.
