Three phases of CALL
Behavioristic CALL
Repeated exposure to the same material is beneficial or even essential to learning.
A computer is ideal for carrying out repeated drills, since the machine does not get bored with presenting the same material and since it can provide immediate non-judgmental feedback.
A computer can present such material on an individualized basis, allowing students to proceed at their own pace and freeing up class time for other activities.
Communicative CALL
It focuses more on using forms rather than on the forms themselves. Teaches grammar implicitly rather than explicitly. Allows and encourages students to generate original utterances rather than just manipulate prefabricated
language. Does not judge and evaluate everything the students nor reward them with congratulatory messages, lights, or
bells. Avoids telling students they are wrong and is flexible to a variety of student responses. Uses the target language exclusively and creates an environment in which using the target language.
Integrative CALL: multimedia
A more authentic learning environment is created since listening is combined with seeingSkills are easily integratedStudents have great control over their learning
Integrative CALL: the InternetComputer Mediated Communication (CMC)Easy way of learning for language learners
Information and communication technologyThe 4Cs of ICT:• Computing• Connectivity• Content• Capacity
Applications can be divided under two broad categories.- Dependent and traditional telecommunications
networks- Human Independent
Digital dividesIt's actually a manifestation of other underlying divides, spanning, economic, geographic, gender, etc.
1. Awareness2. Availability 3. Accessibility4. Affordability
Reducing the divide requires improvements across all the dimensions of ICT (dubbed the 4c Framework)
• Computing• Connectivity• Content• Capacity (human)
The internet of the future must be:
• Trustworthy• Reliable• Vendor neutral• Easy to use• Affordable• Able to change rapidly• Innovative and capable of significant expansion• Transparently and well managed
