What  is  the  impact  of  publishing  collecFons  in  Wikipedia?      Preliminary  findings:  1.  Open  data  publicaFon  leads  to  exponen8al  reach  

2.   Long  tail  differs  in  offline  /  online  environment  

3.  Metadata  and  image  quality  is  essenFal  to  facilitate  (or  hinder)  reuse    

Results  can  inform  future  policy  and  resource  allocaFon  to  improve  access.

 The  collecFon:  369,000  pieces  (153,000  material  culture  /  216,000  photographic)    Merged  in  2014  with  NaFonal  Museum  of  Ethnography  in  Leiden  and  Afrika  

Museum  in  Berg  en  Dal  to  become  NaFonal  Museum  of  World  Cultures  Total  collecFon:  600,000  (367,000  material  culture  /  230,000  photographic,  plus  another  400.000  

documentary  images)    Digital  policy:  open  collecFons

Tropenmuseum  began  its  collaboraFon  with  Wikimedia  in  2009    •  pilot  with  Suriname  collecFon,  alongside  the  Maroon  exhibiFon  ‘Kunst  

van  overleven’,  2009  •  45.000  object  images  and  historical  photographs  from  the  Netherlands  

East  Indies  and  Indonesia  collecFons,  2009  •  4208  photographs  and  objects  within  the  framework  of  the  Wiki  Africa  

project,  2012
