IPS SAFETY REVIEW: FALL ORIENTATION

EXPEDITION

• This is an IPS Trip Safety Review for our annual Fall Expedition

• It should take less than 7 minutes to review

• Once finished, parents must complete the mandatory Informed Consent Waiver and forward it to the school by Friday, August 29, 2014.

WHY do we go?

To offer an opportunity:● for students to take responsibility for themselves in an expedition context● for students and staff to get to know each other informally outside the classroom

before embarking on the academic year● to present each grade level with progressively challenging experiences

WHERE WE GO: TRIP

ROUTE

The Fall Orientation Expedition makes use of camping and hiking opportunities in Garibaldi Park, Squamish and Alice Lake.

Grades 6 & 7Students camp together at Alice Lake.

DAY 1:Grade 6 - Hiking at Alice LakeGrade 7 - Rock climbing in Squamish with Squamish Rock Guides Association

DAY 2: Day hike up Stawamus Chief

WHERE WE GO: TRIP

ROUTE

Grade 8DAY 1: Hike up the Rubble Creek Trail and set up base camp at Garibaldi Lake camp ground. DAY 2: hike up to Panorama Ridge for the day.

Grade 9 Complete the Helm Creek Crossover. DAY 1: Helm Creek DAY 2: Taylor Meadows

WHAT WE DO: ITINERARY

Wednesday, September 3, 2014

Grades 6 & 7● 9:00am - Students meet in Snug Cove

in front of Library for attendance & to board the 9:35 am ferry

● 10:00am - Off-island students meet the group in the ferry passenger pickup & drop off area in Horseshoe Bay to load vehicles and head to Alice Lake

● 11:30am - students set up camp; explore; Hike; swim; play games

● 12:30pm - GR 7: depart on bus to rock climb in Squamish (Smoke Bluffs)

Wednesday, September 3, 2014

Grades 8 & 9• 8:00am - GR 8/9: Students meet in Snug

Cove in front of Library for attendance & to board the 8:35 am ferry

• 9:00am - GR 8/9: Off-island students meet the group in the ferry pickup & drop-off area in Horseshoe Bay to load vehicles

• GR 8 students are dropped-off at Rubble Creek trailhead and hike to Garibaldi Lake; set up camp; eat dinner; star gaze; deep sleep

• GR 9 students are dropped-off at Cheakamus Lake trailhead and hike to Helm Creek; set up camp; eat dinner; star gaze; deep sleep

Thursday, September 4, 2014

• GR 6/7 students day hike to Stawamus Chief

• GR 8 students day hike to Panorama Ridge; return to Garibaldi Lake camp

• GR 9 students complete the Helm Creek Crossover to Taylor Meadows (set-up camp)

Communication

• The trip leader will contact IPS daily and leave a message with the location/condition of the group and confirmation of any significant itinerary revisions.

• The trip leader will leave their cell phone on from 5:00-6:00pm to receive any urgent messages.

• If you need to get an emergency message to staff or students, contact the school for a message relay.

After school hours, contact:

Risk Management

• Ratio of Adults to students in camp: 5:1

• Pre-Trip Prep done September 2nd

with all students

• COPA Awards (June 2014)IPS students in Grades 7-9 learned camp skills: ropes; fires; tarps; cooking; camp stoves; packing gear; backpack sizing and support

All Adult participants undergo:

● Safety procedures meeting

● Student medical alert review

STUDENT

EXPECTATIONS

● Students are expected to uphold the commitments of the IPS Membership Charter.

● Students who disobey any rules pertaining to safety, or who significantly detract from the positive experience of fellow students will be sent home at the expense of their parents.

● This is an "unplugged" trip. No cell phones, iPods, etc. Cameras are welcome.

Please carefully review the “Fall Expedition Equipment List (2014)” and ensure that your son or daughter has the proper gear for the trip.
