The Commodore 64 was released in August, 1982. It became
extremely popular and one reason was that people could use their
joysticks from previous Atari consoles with it.

the NES, was released and was very successful, inspiring other
controller variations.

The Video Crash of 1983 caused a large amount of companies to go bust and
resulted in peoples expenditure on games to drop leaving many games doing badly. It was blamed on a large amount of poor
games being produced.

Nintendo Power magazine was first published due to the success of the NES. It was then ended when the
NES was discontinued in 1995.

Nintendo released its NES console and it was bundled with Mario
Brothers and it became an immediate success. It was
particularly successful in North America and Japan until the 1990’s.

In 1983 the idea of network gaming with personal computers took a leap with Snipes allowing different people
to play together in one game.

Dedicated sound cards were invented meaning that the quality of the games on home computers were
greatly increased meaning that games could start to use better
sounds.

The Intellivision was released by Mattel and it was immediately a
huge success. It was the first console to have better graphics that the Atari
2600.

ColecoVision was introduced and on paper it was seen to be the better
console, however the shear competition of three consoles in the market and bad quality games meant
it didn’t get a lot of sales.
