You'd expect to end a series on a life with the account of a death

Summarize things about David we should remember First things we

hear about David do not come from Samuel - he hadn't met David - but from God

In context of Saul's presumption at Gilgal

1 Samuel 13:13-14 NIV "You acted foolishly," Samuel said. "You have not kept the command the LORD your God gave you; if you had, he would have established your kingdom over Israel for all time.

In context of Saul's presumption at Gilgal

(14) But now your kingdom will not endure; the LORD has sought out a man after his own heart and appointed him leader of his people, because you have not kept the Lord's command."

For all David's faults There was something

about David's heart that God liked

How did David live? He lived with a

mission

Each time he met one goal, he reached for another

As a young man, his goal was to become king Once he became king, his goal was to rid Israel of

its enemies and bring peace Once that was done, his goal was to build God's

temple

David lived and died looking forward

It is not important that you reach your goals

It is vitally important that you have goals

He lived with passion David had many

moods He was not like

most of us He couldn't just

keep his cool Whatever emotion

David was feeling, he let you know it

Emotional nature goes with creative genius

That was why David could write like he did

His pen pricked more hearts than his sword ever did

He built a kingdom around 1,000 BC, but his pen touches us today

We all empathize with David His brothers were

jealous of him His parents never

thought he would amount to much

He had friends turn on him - and try to kill him

We all empathize with David He lived on the lam The woman he

loved stopped loving him

His daughter was raped

He had a baby die His older sons died

in rebellion

We all empathize with David One son ran him out

of his home His country took

sides against him His trusted friend

stabbed him in the back

He had God say "No!" to his most heartfelt desire

We all empathize with David David was able to

take what these experiences do to your heart and put them on paper

He lived with vision He didn't live

thinking about his kingdom, but about Christ's kingdom

The apostles always pointed to David to legitimize Jesus

Three lessons from David

Allow sin no place in your life Sin entered David's

heart but it couldn't stay there long

He never got comfortable and calloused to sin

Compare David with Saul David's sinned

more than Saul Saul confessed sin

more than David Saul could confess;

David would repent Saul never let the

word sink into his life; David did

Psalms 51:16-17 NIV You do not delight in

sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. (17) The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

Psalms 37:27-28 NIV Turn from evil and

No matter what evil is in your life

Turn from it and do good and God will grant you security

Don't allow sin to stay with you so long that you lose your sensitivity to God

Be aware of the purpose of God in every circumstance This was the way

David handled: Delay. 10 years from

the promise to the throne

Attacks. Shimei. "Maybe God told him to curse me."

Discipline. God is punishing me to make me better

David never lost sight of God Psalms 37:3-7 NIV

Trust in the LORD and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. (4) Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart.

David never lost sight of God (5) Commit your

way to the LORD; trust in him and he will do this: (6) He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun.

You can’t write like this unless you are aware of God's grace Pick one word to

sum up everything you've ever accomplished - and everything you ever will accomplish

There is no better word than "dust"

… If anyone else thinks he has reasons to put confidence in the flesh, I have more: (5) circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the law, a Pharisee;

of the God who is ready to forgive the contrite and humble heart

If I learn nothing else from David, I want to learn how to keep my heart right before God
