This project was created by a Social Studies teacher, in association with Colorado State University.

This project is intended to help students think about what WWI meant for the people who were really involved. It is designed to help them gain an appreciation for what these people had to do to contribute to the War, as well as allow them a creative approach to representing their knowledge.

This lesson is designed for 8th grade students at grade level. Modifications can be made for higher grade levels as far as length. For a higher level class, the information can be presented in a whole project to which they would need to gather other information aside from the WebQuest. They could also write their article longer and turn it into an essay.

Students will need to have a basic understanding of the causes of WWI, how and why the U.S. got involved, and the geography of where the battles took place.

Social Studies Standards Addressed•Standard 1.2

•Students should know how to organize historical events and people.•Emergence of the United States as a World Power, 1890-1920.

•This is also a great exercise in thinking critically for the students. Instead of just spitting back facts and information, they must internalize the information and represent what they learned in a creative way. •Additionally, this project can be a great way to help students get interested in history by connecting to the feelings, experiences, and environments of specific people in the past, instead of a whole war or battle. This lesson can be given to all classes of 8th grade American history, following an introduction to WWI in a prior lesson or assignment. The teacher should spent approximately 10 minutes explaining what the assignment involves, reviewing any background information about the war, and helping students become familiar with the WebQuest design if they haven't used it.

Following this introduction, the students should break into pairs and decide if they want to write about the soldier or the woman.

Depending on the length of classes, the students will most likely take one period to do the research and take notes, and a half of another class to compose their article.

This can be done by teachers with all levels of experience. The most important thing for the teacher to do is to provide adequate background knowledge of the WWI so that they can relate the people’s experiences to a larger spectrum of knowledge of WWI.

VariationsIf you only have one computer to present the information in front of the whole class, the students can view the resources provided for both the soldier and the woman, taking notes for each, and finally write an article for both, instead of having them divide into groups.

Describe what's needed to implement this lesson. Some of the possibilities:

• Computers for each student if available (see previous slide for modifications) •Also, students will need a notebook to take notes on the information they will need to write their articles on. •Only one teacher is needed to complete this project, however, multiple classrooms can collaborate to share their articles.

It will be very important to assess how well the students are able to connect the lives of those involved in the war to the overall events of WWI itself. This could involved a follow-up class discussion.

Once they gain a better understanding of WWI and how it impacted people’s lives, they can transition into learning about the impact it had on the United States as a World Power, in accordance with Standard 1.2.
