POWER SECTOR IN INDIA
INTRODUCTION
• India is the 9th largest economy in the world, driven by a real GDP growth of 8.7% in the last 5 years (7.5% over the last 10 years).
• With production of 1,052 terra watt hour (TWh), India is the 4th largest producer and consumer of electricity in the world. It also has 5th largest installed capacity in the world.
• Electricity production in India stood at 967 TWh during FY14. The production expanded at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.6 per cent during FY07-14.
HISTORY
• The power sector in India has significant progress since 1947, the country had a power generating capacity of 1,362 MW with per capita consumption of 16.3 KWH .
• Hydro power and coal based thermal power have been the main sources of generating electricity.
• Today this sector has an installed capacity of 2,23,344 MW
per capita consumption of 917.2( approx) KWH
ENERGY INTENSITY
• Energy intensity, defined as the energy input associated with a unit of gross domestic product (GDP), is a measure of the energy efficiency of a nation’s economy
• India’s energy intensity has been declining over the years and is expected to decline further.
DEMAND AND SUPPLY OF ENERGY
• The year 2013-14 turned out to be a difficult year for the Indian economy with GDP growth rate falling below 5 per cent.
• Energy deficit came down to 4.2 per cent as compared to 8.7 per cent in FY 13 and peak deficit also fell to 4.5 per cent from 9 per cent in FY 13

TYPES OF ENERGY
PREDOMINANT SOURCES OF POWER IN INDIA
• Thermal Power Energy• Nuclear Power Energy• Hydro-Electric Power Energy• Solar Energy• Wind Energy• Geo-Thermal • Tidal Wave Energy• Bio-mass Energy
THERMAL POWER ENERGY
• At the end of financial year 2014, India had 243 GW of installed power generating capacity. 69.2% of it is based on thermal power projects, mostly dominated by coal based power stations
• As of 31 March, 2014, the total capacity of coal based thermal power plants was 145.3 GW (59.8% of the total).
• This capacity is aggregate of more than 140 thermal power stations spread across the nation mainly in the eastern, western and southern regions.

NUCLEAR POWER ENERGY
• There are currently 21 operational nuclear power reactors in India, across 6 states generating 4,560 MW (2.9% of total installed base)

SOLAR ENERGY
• India is endowed with vast potential for solar energy and is rapidly emerging as a major manufacturing hub for solar power plants.
• It is expected that the annual PV-installed capacity will grow at a CAGR of around 49.5% between 2010 and 2014 to reach 1,500 MW by the end of 2014.
• From barely 20 MW in 2011, India’s installed solar capacity has increased to 1,686 MW at the end of 2013.
• The total grid-connected solar capacity, commissioned under the National Solar Mission, crossed the 2,500-MW mark and stood at 2,632 MW as on March 31, 2014.

WIND ENERGY
• A total capacity of 22,465 MW has been established up to December, 2014, mainly in Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Rajasthan.
• Wind energy accounts for nearly 70% (21.1 GW) of installed capacity, thereby making India the world’s 5th largest wind energy producer.
GEO THERMAL ENERGY
• India’s geothermal energy installed capacity is experimental at the moment. So commercial use is insignificant.
• India has about 340 hot springs spread over the country. Of this, 62 are distributed along the northwest Himalaya, in the States of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
