WHAT IS MINERAL ?• Minerals are inorganic; they are not alive and

they are not plants or animals.• Minerals are found in the earth or are naturally

occurring substances. They are found in dirt, rocks, and water. They are not made by man.

• Minerals are chemical substances.• E.g. of minerals: coal , petroleum , copper , gold

1)IRONIron is a metal that is very commonly found on the Earth and even in the Sun and other stars. Because it is so common and has many uses, it is the most used and cheapest of all metals. It

is used in building bridges, ships, and buildings. Iron is also one of only three metals that can be turned into magnets. Iron has also been used in making ink, coins, and furniture

too!

2)GOLDGold is a precious metal.

Ornaments are made of it. In India, very little gold is available.

Gold has industrial uses also.

1)COALCoal is a black or brown rock that can be burned to

produce energy in the form of heat. There are several different types and ranks of coal. Coal is classified by

degrees of hardness, moisture and heat content. Because coal is composed of once living material, it is

known as a "fossil fuel." In the burning of coal, its energy is released. It is also known as ‘BLACK

DIAMOND’.

2)PETROLEUMPetroleum is crude oil, a naturally occurring liquid that can be refined to make gasoline (or petrol), diesel fuel, jet fuel, home heating oil, lubricating oil, wax and many other valuable products. Crude oil usually occurs in subsurface deposits. It is also known as ‘BLACK GOLD’
