• If you wish to make a change from PreAP to On-level, please make the change on the card and sign.
• If you would like to make change from On-level to PreAP, please contact the teacher to discuss the change you would like to see. Also, indicate the change on the card and sign.
Placement
The required summer reading assignment for incoming 7th grade Pre-AP is The Giver by Lois Lowry.
Students should read closely and critically. They will want to utilize some of the reading strategies learned in 6th grade such as annotating and/or reader response journals.
Students will begin the first nine weeks working with this text.
There will be a summative writing assessment
associated with the novel.
Students may use an electronic reader, hard copy of the book, or library book. For most, a personal copy of the novel is the best choice. However, students proficient with the highlighting and note taking functions of their e-reader are welcome to use that format.
In May, 6th grade teachers will remind students of this assignment and review the requirements.

7th Grade One Semester Electives
A PREREQUISITE is a course that must be taken before another course can be
taken.
In 7th grade, Beginning Art must be taken before Intermediate Art or Applied Arts and Crafts.
Journalism requires an application that you pick up from your RELA teacher.
Several 7th grade courses are prerequisites to 8th grade courses. For example, Theater I must be taken in 7th grade prior to Theater II and Intermediate Art prior to Advanced Art.

• There are several courses that can be taken as an EIGHTH grader and you must take the prerequisite courses as a SEVENTH grader.

What might my schedule look like with a year-long elective?
• PE provides an overview of several sports and activities. Some examples are bowling, crab soccer, and basketball.
• Athletics allows for the opportunity to compete against the other middle schools in track, basketball, and volleyball for girls and football for boys.
• You DO NOT have to be in athletics to try out for a sport but if you make the team, your schedule WILL change for you to go into athletics.
Physical Education vs. Athletics
• Athletics lasts the entire school year.• You are required to dress out in an RMS
athletic uniform & appropriate shoes EVERY day.
• Athletics is for those who wish to compete and work hard EVERYDAY. We consider athletics an “accelerated-accelerated“ PE class. The expectations and activity are intense.
• If you do not make a team, you will be in off season.
• 7th grade athletics is 1st period. If you are on the team, you must be ready to participate at 7:00 AM for football and 7:30 AM for volleyball, basketball, and track.
A little more about athletics…
• Football – 1st semester (athletics all year) *There are no tryouts for football and if you sign up for athletics for the
year, you will play football.*
• Basketball – Can move into the course in November if you try out and make the team.
• Track – 2nd semester (Can take PE in the fall and move into Athletics in the Spring)

Selecting athletics or PE on the course card
• Requires at least 5 hours of training, Monday-Friday
• Students will select an additional elective in place of their school PE class.
• There is an application process in place, ending with approval at the district level.
• Processing requests for Off Campus PE for the upcoming school year is recommended prior to May 9.
Off Campus PE
• Mandatory Parent Meeting Feb. 18 at 5:00pm in the library. Parents MUST attend – this is the only time tryout packets will be distributed and parents may only pick up packets for their OWN child.
• Tryouts are closed and are March 7 at 1:00.
• An optional Mock Tryout is March 6, 2012.
• You must attend practice March 3-5 from 4:00-6:00 pm.
• If you make the cheerleading squad, you will be required to take one semester of Cheer Training which counts as one semester of PE.
Cheerleading
If your 6th grade teacher recommends a reading or math strategies class, the class will take the place of 2 one semester or one year long elective.

• Verification Sheets will be sent home in March and again with the end of year report card.
• The verification sheet is not the same as a SCHEDULE.– The verification sheet is just VERIFYING what you are
REQUESTING to have in your schedule.
• There may be a conflict with another class that you want or the class may be full. This means that one of the backup choices on your yellow card would be substituted for one of the electives listed on your Verification Sheet. That is why it is SO important to list alternatives that you are interested in taking.

• Any student whose immunization is due during the summer OR the first semester of the new school year MUST update the immunization record prior to picking up the back-to-school packet in August.
