Contraceptive choices –
after you’ve had your baby
Contraception may be the last thing on your mind
when you have just had a baby, but it is something
you need to think about if you want to delay or
avoid another pregnancy. Many unplanned
pregnancies happen in the first few months after
childbirth, so even if you’re not interested in sex at
the moment, it is better to be prepared.
Intrauterine Device (IUD) An IUD is a small plastic and copper
device is put into the uterus. It stops
sperm reaching an egg, and may
also stop a fertilised egg implanting
in the uterus.
It can stay in 5–10 years depending
on type but can be taken out
sooner. Your periods may be
heavier or longer or more painful.
When the IUD is removed your
fertility will return to normal.
A doctor or nurse will insert the IUD.
Intrauterine System (IUS) An IUS is a small T-shaped plastic
device which releases a progestogen
hormone. This is similar to the natural
progesterone that women produce in
their ovaries.
A trained doctor or nurse will put the
IUS into your uterus (womb). The IUS
has two soft threads at one end which
hang through the opening at the
entrance of your uterus – the cervix –
into the top of your vagina.
It works for up to five years.
Contraceptive Injections Contraceptive injections contain a
progestogen hormone which is
similar to the natural progesterone
that women produce in their ovaries.
There are two types of injection.
Depo-Provera protects you from
pregnancy for 12 weeks and
Noristerat protects you for eight
weeks. Both of these are very
effective hormonal methods of
contraception.
Contraceptive Implants An implant is a small flexible rod
that is placed just under your skin
in your upper arm. It releases a
progestogen hormone similar to
the natural progesterone that
women produce in their ovaries
and works for up to three years.
We offer all of these methods
of Contraception – book an
appointment with the Doctor
for more information
