Important Updates
Letter sent out by email and social media regarding our school re-opening on 13/07
3 July 2020
Dear Parent/Carer,
RE: School re-opening 13 July
I am sure that you all share in our frustrations on being unable to open as we had planned on 29 June. However, now in the
process of having chlorinated our water system, we are pleased to inform you that we will be ready to open on Monday 13
July. During this final week we will also have additional chemical portaloos and hand washing facilities available for pupils
and staff. Although we will only be open for one week before the summer holidays begin, it is still extremely important for
your child to have the opportunity to ‘check in and catch up’ and to have face to face contact with your child. During the
sessions in this week together we will reflect on the pupils’ wellbeing and also prepare for September.
You will have received a text message, informing you of the time your child should arrive at school, the entrance to use and
the classroom your child will be in. For safety and in order to adhere to the new controlled measures, it is crucial that your
child attends at the correct time, entrance and classroom. We would like pupils to wear uniform if they are able to.
However for those pupils who have outgrown some items, they are to wear their PE kit or a white top, black jumper and
black bottoms. We will be flexible regarding footwear. Please be reminded that pupils will need to bring a pen along with
a filled water bottle and if they wish, a snack. As a control measure, there will be no food or water available at school.
To re-open safely, the school is operating at a fixed capacity. Therefore, places have only been made available where the
parent/carer has informed us that their child/children will be attending school. Unfortunately, pupils who arrive at school
without prior contact from parents/carers will not be able to attend school. This is because the staffing compliment is in
place to meet the registered demand. If you have changed your mind and now wish to send your child to school, please let
us know by email: [email protected].
We are also still offering one to one transition appointments for our Year 11 pupils. If your child would like to take up this
opportunity please contact Mr Williams: [email protected]
Please stay safe and thank you for your continued support.
Yours faithfully,
Gerard McNamara

Please look out for a survey which will be sent out to parents/carers and pupils this week. The purpose of this

This week our KS3 pupils have been busy evaluating the progress of their physical challenges and also
researching the importance of sleep, which is something overlooked by us all despite the innumerable
health benefits! We are so impressed with quality and maturity of work produced by our KS3 pupils,
examples of great work can be found on our social media accounts.
Year 9 GCSE PE pupils are producing a very high standard of work through their completion of past
paper questions, we have been very impressed with the knowledge and understanding of the topics
covered. Our Year 10 GCSE pupils have continued their contemporary studies by researching the
factors that affect participation for minority groups within our society. The Prize Question was closely
contested last week with lots of excellent answers entered to the competition, Year 9 pupil Kaycee
Thomas-Evans came out on top the winner. Well done Kaycee!
Home learning can and does present many different challenges for each of our pupils and we are
especially proud of all their hard work, independence and resilience in overcoming many of these new
challenges – a huge well done to all and keep it up!

Languages, Literacy and Communication
On this day in 1949, Nineteen Eighty-Four, George Orwell’s prophetic novel of a world ruled by Big
Brother, was first published.
Miss Williams’ Fact of the Week!
Some people believe that the original name for a butterfly
was a flutterby, however, the name evolved from the words
‘buttorfleoge’ and ‘boterflye’ from Middle English and Old
English. No one is sure how the English name came about,
but it’s similar to words for the insect in Dutch (botervlieg)
and German (butterfliege), both of which have the same
literal components, “butter” plus “fly.” It was once believed
that the insects liked to land on bowls of butter or milk that
were left uncovered. In fact, an alternative German name
for “butterfly” is milchdieb (“milk thief”).

Have you heard of or visited
Cadair Idris in Snowdonia?
One of Wales' most iconic peaks, standing in southern Snowdonia, its name directly translates as Idris' Chair in reference to the mythical giant who once used the mountain as his throne.
There are numerous stories and legends associated with the mountain and Idris.
A few of the nearby lakes - such as Tal-y-llyn - are reputed to be bottomless, and those who venture up the mountain at night should take heed before sleeping on its slopes.
It is said that those who sleep on the mountain will awaken either as a madman, a poet or, indeed, never wake again. This tradition (of sleeping on the summit of the mountain) apparently stems from bardic traditions, where bards would sleep on the mountain in hope of inspiration.
Welsh proverbs
"Dywed yn dda am dy gyfaill, am dy elyn
dywed ddim" - Speak well of your friend;
of your enemy, say nothing.
"Dyfal donc a dyr y
garreg" - Tapping
persistently breaks the
stone.
Welsh facts
Believe it or not, a Welsh man was once
America’s ‘Most Wanted’! Llewelyn Humphreys,
hailing from Powys, was responsible for mob
legend Al Capone’s financial accounts – which
should say plenty!
Mount Everest was named after a Welsh man!
Sir George Everest, in fact, gives his name to the
peak, and was a surveyor.

Mrs Twinberrow’s pick of the
week!
The Journey to Greenland (Le voyage au
Groenland) is a 2016 French comedy
which is rated a 12 and is available to
watch on Netflix.
Thomas and Thomas, two thirtyish
aspiring actors from Paris, leave the city
to go to Kullorsuaq, one of the most
remote villages of Greenland, where the
father of one of them has been living for
years.
Life on the edge of the world, the
isolation of the glaciers, their lives
compared to the lives of the local
population and their traditions, force
them to put their existence back in
perspective. During their stay with the
Inuit community, their friendship is
challenged as they learn the local
customs.
