We are disappointed not to be able to welcome all of the children back. This is due to the guidance on social distancing and smaller class sizes, which means that schools do not have enough staff or space to open to more children. Our classrooms can only fit 9 children in safely rather than the proposed 15 which increases the demand on staffing and space. We will be reopening to Year 6 pupils on Monday 15th June and, once we know how many Year 6 pupils have returned, we will confirm plans to re-open to additional children, based on what the available school space and staff numbers allow. Leadership at school are also discussing priorities for September, with regards to learning, transition back into school after a long period at home and well-being. However, until we have guidance from the government, we do not know what the return will look like. Once the government shares their plans for schools, we can plan in more detail and will inform you of any changes with as much advance notice as possible. Home Learning Home learning has evolved over the last 10 weeks as guidance has changed and training and technology support has been put in place. We will continue to review our offer and respond to the guidance and feedback we receive, so all of our families are supported well. We hope the recent changes have been a success. Now that Home Learning cycles are weekly, we will be keeping a list of requests for paper copies so parents do not have to email in weekly. The packs will be available each day at the gate at the new time of 2.30pm. This is so social distancing can continue when we dismiss year 6 and key worker children. Please note that the paper copies are ONLY for families who cannot access online learning. You do not need a printed copy of the online learning if you are using Google Classroom. Answers can be written into an exercise book or onto paper. This will help the environment by reducing the amount of paper we all use as well as the costs and time it takes to print. Key Worker Provision Key worker provision has been steadily growing over the last couple of weeks. We are now capping the provision so we can continue with our plan to open to year 6 children on Monday. If you need the key worker provision and have not yet requested a place, please contact us and we will add you to a waiting list. All of our teachers are now scheduled to teach key worker children or Year 6 children. We will inform parents in Year 1 of our plans early next week. We understand the difficulties that some families are facing at home and understand the anxieties around not returning to school before the summer. We are also disappointed not to be able to open to all of the eligible year groups at this time, however please understand that we need to work within the constraints of the government’s guidance, in order to ensure the safety of pupils and staff at all times. We will keep you informed of any updates. Risk Assessment We have shared the risk assessment on the website along with a Year 6 welcome back booklet and a video showing some of the changes we have put in place at school. Please watch the video with your child if you can, as it will help them to settle in once they are back on Monday. We hope it will reassure you and your children that we are working really hard to re-open in the safest possible way, to as many pupils as possible. http://www.derwentwaterschool.com/Return ing-to-School

Schools Not Opening to Everyone

The Government announced that not all year groups will be returning to school before the summer

holidays, unlike what was announced in May. We are disappointed not to be able to welcome all of the

children back. This is due to the guidance on social distancing and smaller class sizes, which means

that schools do not have enough staff or space to open to more children. Our classrooms can only fit

9 children in safely rather than the proposed 15 which increases the demand on staffing and space.

We will be reopening to Year 6 pupils on Monday 15th June and, once we know how many Year 6

pupils have returned, we will confirm plans to re-open to additional children, based on what the

available school space and staff numbers allow.

Leadership at school are also discussing priorities for September, with regards to learning, transition

back into school after a long period at home and well-being. However, until we have guidance from the

government, we do not know what the return will look like. Once the government shares their plans

for schools, we can plan in more detail and will inform you of any changes with as much advance notice

as possible.

your entries. Here is some amazing work from Penelope. Google Meet Video It was lovely to see some of our Year 6 children this week on Google Meet. We are aware that some of you had issues logging in but we will set up another video for those of you who remain at home next Thursday. Please look out on the Google Classroom stream for your teacher’s message with the link and time of your meeting. We encourage you to watch our videos every Monday morning as they outline the plan for the week. Return to school We are excited to welcome year 6 children back to school on Monday 15th June. There are some changes that we have shared in a video and a welcome back booklet which will help prepare your children for school on Monday. You can access these on our school website along with the risk assessment. Year 6 Bubbles You will receive a message before the weekend telling you which bubble your child is in, the colour of their bubble and when to arrive at school. The bubbles will not be changed for the safety of all involved. Both the main gate and the blue door will be open so you can enter from the nearest to your home at your allocated time. Your child should look out for the adult holding their coloured card on the playground and walk to that adult to join their bubble. Year 6 Yearbook and end of year video Please send completed tasks along with your pictures and video clip before 16th June, 2020 if you would like to be part of our yearbook and video. Reading Buddy Well done to 2Jet this week for their excellent effort on Reading Buddy. Lots of children logged in from this class and completed quizzes and read many books. Well done to everyone in the other classes who has logged in this week and worked hard to improve their reading comprehension. Reading As you can see, the new books bought with our Scholastic Rewards have been a breath of fresh air in the lower hall. We have also chosen books that are suitable for children who are ready to read chapter books. Thank you once again to all the children, parents and carers who have supported us and enabled us to purchase these wonderful books! Reading to your child Although the life of a parent is often hectic, parents and carers should try to read with their child at least once a day at a regularly scheduled time. Don't be discouraged if you skip a day or don't always keep to your schedule. Whilst it is important for your child to read to you, you should regularly read books to them. If you have more than one child, try to spend some time reading alone with each child, especially if they're more than 2 years apart. However, it's also fine to read to children at different stages and ages at the same time. Most children enjoy listening to many types of stories. When stories are complex, children can still get the idea and can be encouraged to ask questions. When stories are easy or familiar, children enjoy these ‘old friends’ and may even help in the reading. Taking the time to read with your children on a regular basis sends an important message: Reading is worthwhile! Assembly What does Black Lives Matter mean?
