Can I take this opportunity to thank each of you for your ongoing support
during this uncertain time. Your words of support and thanks have meant
a great deal to the staff at Brynmawr Foundation School. We have all
missed our normal school life and we cannot wait for all of our pupils to
return.
This is the final parent bulletin of this academic year.
Our summer term officially ends this Friday 17th July.
We will be inform you later this week on the arrangements for the new
school year in September.
GCSE Results day is held on 20th August and again, further information
regarding this will be sent out to you from Mr Williams.
Please stay safe and have a wonderful summer break.
Parent and Pupil Surveys
Please look out for a survey which has been sent out to parents/carers and pupils. The purpose of this survey
is to gain feedback from yourselves regarding a variety of aspects, identifying our strengths and areas you feel
we may need to develop going forward. As always, your feedback and suggestions are extremely valuable in
allowing us to continue on our improvement journey.
Thank you S Lake, Deputy Headteacher
School in September
As you may have read, the Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) have announced that the return to
school in September will be changing in that more pupils will be expected to return to us on a full
time basis. More information regarding when your child will need to return to us will be sent out
following further guidance to be received by WAG.

Important Updates
School re-opening on 13/07
The school will be re-opening on 13 July.
As you are aware, one year group will attend and in order for your child to access a place at school
this week, you need to have let us know. You have been sent information detailing the arrival time
and room number they are in. However, if they can’t remember, there will be staff outside on hand
to help them. Again, please be advised that if they have not applied for a place this week, they will
not have a place and will need to return home. Pupils are expected to wear their uniform if they are
able to.
Monday: Year 10
Tuesday: Year 9
Wednesday: Year 8
Thursday: Year 10
Friday: Year 7
During this final week we will also have additional chemical portaloos and hand washing facilities available
for pupils and staff.
Although we will only be open for one week before the summer holidays begin, it is still extremely important
for your child to have the opportunity to ‘check in and catch up’ and to have face to face contact with your
child.
During the sessions in this week together we will reflect on the pupils’ wellbeing and also prepare for
September.
End of Year Reports
Over the coming days year 7, year 8 and year 9 parents will receive progress reports. Here is some additional
information to help you understand these reports.
Targets:
This year we have reported targets, set externally, for pupils based on national models and prior achievement.
However, as more and more of our pupils are now exceeding these targets we are developing more ambitious
targets for our pupils that will roll out from September 2020. If your child is showing that they are currently
predicted a grade/level above their target this shows that their teacher expects them to perform above national
expectations, which is outstanding.
Current Teacher Assessments:
Year 7 and Year 8: These are reported traditionally as a level with A,B,C indicating Very Secure, Secure and
occasionally works at this level but more consistency needed respectively. E.g. 3A is a Very secure Level 3 while
6C shows potential for Level 6.
Year 9: At Brynmawr, KS4 options begin in Year 9 so we record GCSE grades which will have a 1,2,3 indicating
how secure that grade is. E.g C1 is a very secure Grade C and A*3 shows potential for A*
Year 9 - Sociology:
If your child is studying GCSE Sociology, this grade will be reported as a number and not the traditional letter.
This is because England has reformed their grading system and Sociology is run by an English exam board. The
traditional grade/level equivalent are as follows:
Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any further questions or suggestions for what you would like to
see included in future reports.
Important: UNIFORM Please be advised that as school will now be returning to ‘normal’ sooner than we anticipated, all pupils will need to ensure that they wear FULL SCHOOL UNIFORM. Here is a snippet of Anthony Thomas’ blog
about a trip to Paris. It’s an impressive piece of
work for a Year 7.
Can you spot the language techniques and
ambitious vocabulary he has used?
‘
I arrived in Paris aboard a coach with my
two friends Bob and Gill and was welcomed
by the Eiffel Tower, as if it were watching
over me. The beautiful city surrounded me,
and I was engulfed in the excitement of
where to go, what to do, and in what order.
However, I was too tired to experience it, so
I decided to save it for another day or so.’
On this day in 1818, English poet John Keats wrote "In the Cottage Where Burns is Born", "Lines
Written in the Highlands", and "Gadfly"

THE LLC BULLETIN
Monday 13th July 2020
Languages, Literacy and Communication
As it is the final bulletin of the term, the LLC faculty wanted to take this opportunity to say an enormous ‘thank you’ and ‘well
done’ for all the efforts of our pupils during lockdown. It has been a difficult time for everyone, but receiving the wonderful
work and knowing that our pupils have been engaging positively with our work has made us incredibly proud of each and
every one of the pupils at Brynmawr Foundation School.
We think that our pupils are extremely inspiring young people. This global pandemic has been unprecedented, and our
pupils have managed it with bravery, tenacity, resilience, positivity, ingenuity and, most of all, kindness.
Lastly, we would also like to thank parents for supporting their children at home; we appreciate everything you have done
and we appreciate the support you’ve shown us!
Have a great summer. Stay safe! Mrs Pearce and the LLC Faculty!
A message from Miss Olden:
It has been a strange old time. There have been
moments of anxiety, paranoia and fear but; this has
also been a time to pause, reflect and take
stock…remember what we have to be grateful
for…remember what we used to take for
granted…what we miss.
I am grateful for my family and friends. I am grateful
that I am safe and cared for. I have missed my daily
interactions with you, my pupils: always delightfully
unpredictable, challenging and amazing. You are what
makes teaching great. As much as we look to educate
and guide you, do not under-estimate how much we
learn from you.
Unfortunately, my journey with you, at Brynmawr, has
come to an end as I will not be returning in
September. As sad as this makes me, I will carry
forward a wealth of memories. These memories will
make my life richer. So, thankyou all. Carry on aspiring
and believing that anything is possible.
Be safe, Miss O
A message from Mr Atkins:
It’s been a strange end to the term – not being able to
teach you – but I’m very excited for September and all
it might bring.
Have a well-deserved rest this summer and see you all
in the autumn.
A message from Miss Williams:
Thank you to all pupils who have sent me work over
lockdown, showing an enthusiasm for English and your
own learning (you know who you are). I have seen
some fantastic pieces of work and you should all be
proud.
I hope you have a great summer and I look forward to
seeing you in September. Take care, look after
yourselves, as well as others, and enjoy your time off.
A message from Miss Bentley:
Oh, how I have missed you all!
Lockdown has been a frightening, surreal, lonely experience, but it has brought out the very best in people and has reminded us
all the invaluable importance and wealth of human kindness. I am so looking forward to seeing you all again in September – to be
able to spend my days with the inspiring, funny, insightful, kind and dedicated pupils of Brynmawr is a privilege that has been
reiterated to me over these past months. Have a wonderful summer. Be kind. Miss B. x

Mrs Twinberrow’s pick of the week!
Little Nicholas (French: Le Petit Nicolas), also known
as Petit Nicolas (UK),[3] is a 2009 French-Belgian
family comedy film directed by Laurent Tirard, who
co-wrote with Grégoire Vigneron and Alain Chabat.
It is based on a series of children's books by René
Goscinny. In 1960s Paris, a young boy named
Nicolas and his friends get into all sorts of mischief,
both intentional and unintentional. Matters worsen
when Nicolas, a single child, thinks his mother is
pregnant and a baby brother is forthcoming. A
friend of Nicolas's has a baby brother and thinks
brotherhood is horrible. Thanks to his friend's ideas,
Nicolas believes this means his parents don't love
him anymore and will abandon him. He and his pals
embark on several schemes to raise 500 francs to
have the baby kidnapped and left in a jungle.

This week would have been our trip to Paris. We were
due to leave on Tuesday 14th July which is Bastille Day.
Bastille Day, or the French National Day, is celebrated on July 14th every
year in France. It is a day to celebrate and remember the beginning of the
French Revolution, following the storming of the Bastille in Paris, which was
a fortress and prison representing French Royalty in 1789.
Bastille Day symbolizes the overthrow of
the monarchy and the beginning of a new
French Republic. On July 14, 1789, the
common people of France stormed Bastille,
a military prison, to show their opposition
to the tyrannical rule of the French
aristocrats.
Several Bastille Day traditions contribute
to the festivities of the French national
holiday, but the biggest tradition is the
parade that takes place every year on the
morning of Bastille Day.
We look forward to going on our trip to Paris next year instead, which will be leaving
on Monday 12th July. If anyone would like to find out more about coming with us on
the trip next year, please contact Mrs Twinberrow on [email protected]

Over lockdown, we have been blown away by the resilience, creativity and ingenuity shown by our learners
in science. All year groups have more than shown that they are excellent scientists outside the classroom
and have continued to work hard on every piece of work we have set. In addition to our usual scientists of
the week, each teacher has nominated a “Scientist of the Lockdown” for exceptional work displayed over
this challenging period of home learning. Well done to everyone who has submitted work and to parents
for your role in helping to support our learners with their science work.
Scientists of the week: Finley W, Sam A, Abilash G, Poppy Mc Kaycee T. Da iawn pawb!
Our Scientists of the Lockdown:
Ms Marasco– Molly H
Molly is conscientious with an eye for detail and excellent
presentation. She even tackled the higher tier calculations and symbol equations – well done!
Miss Webb– Ellie H
I have been absolutely blown away by Ellie’s work ethic and eagerness to improve. The video she
produced on the digestive system was outstanding! Her correspondence has also been a joy and
she is displaying a real mature attitude to her studies!
Mr Bartlett – Melissa R
Melissa has maintained a structured and committed attitude to her lockdown
studies, ensuring that tasks have been completed to a high standard. On top
of the home learning tasks that have been prescribed, Melissa has insisted on
further developing her studies in science by accessing additional online
resources. As her physics teacher and Head of Year, I am incredibly proud!
Braydon is a developing as a scientist and demonstrated Mrs Jones Braydon F
excellent research skills. I have particularly been impressed
with his presentation skills!
Excellent effort from the beginning from Seren. Her attitude to Miss Williams Seren D

This week our KS3 pupils have been having some fun to end the year by recreating skills and events
from either the Highland Games or the carnival feel of Brazilian football – we are very much looking
forward to seeing the final pieces this week!
Year 9 GCSE PE pupils are ending the year by producing a synopsis of the requirements needed in their
chosen sport, a culmination of the work they have studied throughout the year. Meanwhile our Year
10 GCSE pupils have been busy completing past paper questions as a revision of the work completed
to-date. The Prize Question has been closely contested throughout lockdown which has made it
extremely difficult to choose a winner each week – a great headache for us to have! This week, and
winner of the penultimate Prize Question was awarded to Lewis W of Year 9.
We have been blown away by the effort, diligence and enthusiasm for work shown by a number of
pupils throughout the school closure, to remain motivated throughout this difficult time has been
quite an achievement! Those pupils will receive a ‘Lockdown Learner’ certificate this week in
recognition of all their hard work over the past 15weeks.
We hope that you have enjoyed taking part in the daily fitness
and fundamental sessions throughout the term. This week,
instead of these session, we will be signposting you to some
great sites that provide daily activities and challenges to keep you busy throughout the summer
holidays – visit our social media account every day at 10am to find out more.
With so many sporting events cancelled this summer we have collated all our Two2Watch

We will be available to provide advice to help parents and carers in meeting the learning and wellbeing
needs of their children. We have set up an ‘EPS Support Line’ for parents and carers to contact us.
They should email
and include a telephone contact and brief information about advice required. We will respond as soon as
possible.
Please note that this offer applies only for parents and carers who would like some extra advice around
supporting their children’s learning needs and / or emotional wellbeing during the period of school
closures.
We are also providing information packs for:
learning at home;
helping with worries; and,
promoting emotional well-being.
The EEF website has a lot of useful information for both schools and families. This document has been useful for me when considering my own children’s routine. ( See documents below) https://educationendowmentfoundation.org.uk/
