INTRODUCTION The records of departments of farm management (1910-1919), rural life (1919-1926), and agricultural economics (1926-1966), chaired by D. Howard Doane and O.R. Johnson. DONOR INFORMATION The papers were donated to the University of Missouri by the Agricultural Economics Department on 10 August 1966 (Accession No. 3674). An addition was made on 5 October 1966 by Elmer R. Kiehl (Accession No. 3682). INSTITUTIONAL SKETCH The Agricultural Economics Department originated in 1926 as an outgrowth of the Farm Management Department and the Rural Life Department. The Farm Management Department was established in 1910, with D. Howard Doane head of the department. In 1913, Doane became the state leader of county agents and O.R. Johnson, an assistant professor, took over the farm management courses. In 1914, Johnson was named acting chairman of the department. During Johnson’s leave of absence, 1917-1919, R.M. Green was acting chairman. Johnson was named chairman of the department upon his return to the university in 1919. In 1919, rural sociology was separated from the department, and the name was changed to Agricultural Economics. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The records are primarily those of D. Howard Doane during his association with the Federal Office of Farm Management and the University of Missouri Department of Farm Management, including his position as state leader of county agents, and the papers of O.R. Johnson while he was acting chairman and chairman of the department. Researchers should also see the Johnson, O. R. (1887-1966), Papers, 1910-1959, (C3483), as there is overlap of time periods and material.
The general correspondence has been arranged chronologically and primarily contains the correspondence of Doane and Johnson. The correspondence of Conrad Hammar, who succeeded S.D. Gromer as an assistant professor in farm finance in 1929, has been separated from the general correspondence, as has the correspondence of Herman Haag, who succeeded F.L. Thomsen as an assistant professor in marketing and prices in 1935. The correspondence and related materials of the Missouri Farm Management Association, the College of Agriculture Council, and the University of Missouri Campus Tours have also been segregated from the general correspondence.
The remainder of the collection is comprised of budget and curriculum materials, faculty appointments, conference and association materials, agricultural and flood control research materials, agricultural bulletins and circulars, project and grant proposals, typescripts of articles and speeches, and limited materials pertaining to the Columbia City Council and the American Legion.
More complete descriptions of the series are in the folder list.
