University of Ghana4
To all the parents, guardians, friends and well-wishers of our graduating students, gathered
here to celebrate the achievements of our graduands, we are happy to welcome you all
to our second Congregation for students who completed their programme of study in the
2012/13 academic year.
For many of you today will bring mixed emotions considering that most of you entered the
University of Ghana barely out of your teens. Many of you may also be the first in your families
to graduate from an institution of higher learning. We honour you for having the courage to
dream. In the four years or so that you have been at the University, you have gone through
many challenges that comes with the pursuit of university education. Some of these no
doubt have made you resilient. Today you have become the confident young men and women
who are graduating today. Congratulations!
Congregation marks a high point on the University’s academic calendar. Each congregation
ceremony is unique and special to us as it presents us with the opportunity to send out
our graduating students in this formal manner. It is a time of joy; it is also a time for sober
reflection on the past and what the future holds in store for you as you make important
decisions on your next steps. As students you have strengthened and enriched our academic
community, and it is a pleasure to share with you the joy of this celebration.
We hope that all our graduating students will look back on their time at the University of Ghana
and will feel proud to be associated with the premier University of national and international
repute. We trust that wherever you find yourselves, you will be good ambassadors of the
University, and give a good account of the academic, moral and social training you have
received during your time here. We are proud to send you out to be a part of the wider
international community of University of Ghana graduates and join the numerous alumni
who continue to contribute to the greatness, excellence and overall success of this University.
Welcome to all ourGraduating students and families
University of Ghana 5

You the members of the graduating class, your parents, guardians, teachers and administrators
have all sacrificed so much to make this day possible. As we gather today to celebrate
your academic achievements, we are also honouring those who have supported you - family,
friends, and loved ones.
We hope you will take back with you, memories of this special day and see it as a fitting finale
to years of hard work and sacrifice.
Congratulations on graduating from the University of Ghana!

Prince Kofi Amoabeng, Chief Executive Officer of
UT Bank and the President of UT Holdings, graduated from the University of Ghana Business School with a BSc Admin (Accounting). He is a retired military officer (Captain) and an investment consultant. He is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA-UK) and a member of Chartered Accountants CA (GH).
Kofi entered the Military Academy in Accra in April 1975, and was commissioned as a Lieutenant by November. While in the army, Kofi won a scholarship from the Ministry of Defence to study the Royal Army Pay Corps course in Cost and Management Accountancy in Winchester, UK. He passed out after a year and a half and returned home.
In 1997, he conceptualized the idea of setting up a ‘finance house’ to provide timely and appropriate finance for businessmen like himself who found it almost impossible to get such assistance from the traditional banking sector. With friends urging him on, he took the plunge, and today, after 15 years, with an initial seed money of 255 million cedis (GHC25,000), UT is now a Bank with a turnover of about US$55.5, employing more than 600 people, and 26 branches in seven of the ten regions of Ghana.
He has extensive experience in managing businesses through excellent customer relations, strategic and tactical business planning as well as strategic partnerships.
Among his achievements are Overall Best
Entrepreneur in the Maiden Ghana Entrepreneurs Award (2011); One of two Ghanaians profiled in Moky Makura’s book on Africa’s Greatest Entrepreneurs which profiles 16 of Africa’s top entrepreneurs; Two times running Ghana’s Most Respected CEO for 2008/2010. He is a recipient of a National Honours for an Order of the Star of the Volta- Officer’s Division and was named the Marketing Man of the Year in 2006.
Mr Amoabeng is a member of the Board of Directors of the Ghana Interbank Payment Settlement System (GHIPSS); a member of the Council of Enablis Ghana (Canadian Entrepreneurial NGO) and a member of the International Advisory Board of China Europe International Business School (CEIBS), in Ghana.

God bless our homeland Ghana,
And make our nation great and strong,
Bold to defend forever
The cause of freedom and of right.
Fill our hearts with true humility
Make us cherish fearless honesty,
And help us to resist oppressors’ rule
With all our will and might evermore.
Hail to thy name, O Ghana
To thee we make our solemn vow;
Steadfast to build together
A nation strong in Unity;
With our gifts of mind and strength of arm,
Whether night or day, in the midst of storm,
In every need whate’er the call may be,
To serve thee, Ghana, now and evermore.
Raise high the flag of Ghana,
And one with Africa advance;
Black star of hope and honor,
To all who thirst for liberty;
Where the banner of Ghana free flies,
May the way to freedom truly lie
Arise, arise, O sons of Ghanaland,
And under God march on forevermore.

Hail University of Ghana
The nation’s hope and glory
The place that bears the star of peace
That bids us all to do our best
Let the great Tower of learning
Inspire both young and old
May we proceed in unity to uphold the public
cause.
//: Arise, arise O Legon
Defend the cause of freedom
Proceed in truth and integrity
to make our nation proud ://
We ask for strength and wisdom
As we climb the hill of learning
May we excel in what’er we do
As we prepare to face the world
With a mind ready at all times
And a conscience quick to feel
May we proceed in unity to uphold the public
cause.
//: Arise, arise O Legon
Defend the cause of freedom
Proceed in truth and integrity to make
our nation proud ://

2009• The University’s ICT-
based Distance Education
Project, sponsored by the
Government of Ghana
through a concessionary
loan from the People’s
Republic of China was
launched. The project is
geared towards improving
upon the quality of
teaching, learning and
research through the
introduction of an
e-learning system.
2010• The University made
changes to the
requirements for
graduation in content and
structure, introducing
critical thinking, logic
and behaviourism to
instill critical thinking in
students’ life and mode of
analysis.
2011• University of Ghana
makes changes in re-
opening schedule to
accommodate candidates
who wrote their entrance
examinations in May/June
2011 to allow successful
applicants to enter the
University in the same
year rather than having
to wait for a year as is
usually the case. This
arose partly because
the WASSCE was not
written in June due to the
change from a 3-year to a
4-year Senior High School
education.
2012• The pioneer class of
the Distance Education
programme graduated.
The University’s Distance
Education Programme
officially was launched
in the 2007/8 academic
year to widen access to
all qualified applicants
irrespective of family,
social commitments or
geographical background.
• University approves a
new structure for PhD
programmes in line
with international best
practices. The new
structure will allow
the admission of first
degree holders into the
MPhil/PhD programmes,
the introduction
of comprehensive
examinations, the
introduction of
compulsory course work
and the formal defense of
research proposals.
• Inauguration of Carnegie-
sponsored Research
Commons at the
University’s Balme Library.
2013• In line with the
programme to enhance
teaching and research, the
University has acquired
scientific equipment
awaiting installation. A
Smart X2S Automated
System at the Department
of Chemistry; An X-Ray
Diffractometer at the
Department of Physics; a
High Performance Liquid
Chromatograph (HPLC)
to the Department of
Biochemistry, Cell and
Molecular Biology.
