Yay! We come to the fifth issue very happy with great
results obtained from the two Tropicalia Bazaars and the
Tropicalia Magazine. In fact it is on behalf of the bazaars
that this magazine exists. A big kiss to all participants of
the bazaars which have been dedicated to providing
beautiful products, some exclusive and for minimum prices.
Have you visited the Tropicalia Bazaar today?
This fifth issue explores the unconscious and surreal on
fashion and in the Sims of Second Life. Many artists are
influenced by Surrealism -- an artistic and literary
movement that rocked the art world in the 20´s.
Check out great looks composed by the dearest Laylinha
Tomsen, MokaTana Boa, Stu Reyes and Vick Spitteler in
“I S2 Fashion”. Vick presents us some releases of our
“Tropicalians” in “Newsphere”. Discover also four
blogs not to miss in “Blogsphere”.
Silton Mindes, inspired by Surrealism, finds the best
horizon on Cadeling Garden. And don’t forget to
take a look at the selected pictures in
“That Tropicalia Feeling”.
A big kiss to all and
happy reading!
Thereaver Barrymore.

Surreal
By Thereaver Barrymore
Second Life is a universe of possibilities where we
can assume any identity, fantasy and experience
which we can´t have in real life. Among tribes
and styles, you can highlight one path in which
many designers and photographers decided to
follow: the surreal.
Surrealism was a cultural movement that began
in the 20´s in Paris and became popular for the
artistic and literary works of a group of people.
Its greatest mentor and leader was André Breton
(French poet and writer, 1896 - 1966). Surrealism
has its origins based on theories of Sigmund
Freud, Psychoanalysis and Psychology. Freud
questioned the then prevailing cultural beliefs in
Europe, as well as human posture, vulnerable
against a reality more and more difficult to
understand and master.
Freud's theory has a great importance in the
constitution of surrealistic ideology that values
above everything the performance of the
unconscious in the process of creation. Surrealism
tries to express the absence of human rationality
and the manifestations of the subconscious.
The pinnacle of the artistic movement was in
30´s with the works of Salvador Dali and Rene
Magritte who won the world in the field of fine
arts. Characteristics of surrealism were a
combination of the representative of the
abstract, the unreal and the unconscious.
It was in the 30´s that Elsa Schiparelli, a French
fashion designer born in Italy (1890-1973),
received widespread strong influence of the
Surrealist Movement in fashion, mainly because
of her proximity to the artist Salvador Dali.
Schiaparelli was the inspiration for many
designers, notably Jean Paul Gaultier, and
Galliano in 90. Their creations were playful and
theatrical with extravagant elements from art,
creating a new language in fashion. It was at the
hands of Alexander McQueen, the British
designer, that Surrealism came into vogue again
with displacements of shapes and finishes.
McQueen is the main inspiration of Nicola
Formichetti, the “crazy” mind responsible for the
costumes of the most surreal fashion icon today:
Lady Gaga.

Gaga looks like a Second Life avatar. Such
comparison is possible because in Second Life
anything is possible. Many designers inspired by
the collections of Alexander McQueen, Nicola
Formichetti or even Salvador Dali create clothes
and amazing locations.
The unconscious and the unreal are the basis of
any surrealist work. The avatar AM Radio is
probably one of the artists who actually managed
to bring surrealism to Second Life. Known for the
famous wheat field and the characteristic train
in the middle of an expanse of water, AM Radio
has created several unique and instigating
installations. Nowadays you can visit only one of
his works, The Far Away.
There's a tenuous line between fantasy and the
surreal. In lands like Gilmour, Florencio,
Mysterious Waves, Osaka, World's End Garden,
Wild Ride, The Path, among others, you can see
the influence of the subconscious in the concept
of creating the place.
As previously mentioned, the surrealism is
also in fashion inside Second Life. You can
find countless references to Alexander
McQueen in the metaverse, or creations
worthy of Lady Gaga. Some people call these
creations Haute Couture, although this term
has legal protection to prevent it from being
used indiscriminately, as it serves only to
designate a high standard of creations. The
surrealism in fashion in Second Life is in
special creations which are audacious and
extravagant. It is possible to highlight some
brands such as House of Fox, Glam Affair,
Violator, Eshi Otawara, SyS, CheerNo, among
others.
Dare! If, in real life, you don’t want to go
into the streets like Lady Gaga, in Second
Life you can!
