Bushkill Falls, Bushkill Falls, the Niagara of Pennsylvaniathe Niagara of Pennsylvania Since 1904 when Charles E. Peters realized his dream, Bushkill
Falls, and charged just 10¢/person on opening day, visitors can imagine
how it was when the Leni Lenape inhabited the area! Step into the life-
size longhouse in the Native American exhibit, look up through the
smoke hole, and visualize cooking and sleeping there. The displays
of utensils and hunting equipment are a reminder that meals involved
more than a simple trip to the grocery store or fast food franchise.
Bushkill Falls is a very do-able day trip. “It’s much easier to get to
Bushkill Falls today than it was in 1917,” comments General Manager
Donna Smith. “We pride ourselves in maintaining Mr. Peters’ dream.
It’s a piece of history that can never be replaced.” Enjoy walking trails
with well-constructed stairs and bridges; challenge the Red Trail, a 2-
mile hike around all 8 waterfalls!
Free parking and picnic area with grills add to the affordable
appeal. An open-air pavilion can be rented for events! You’ll fi nd a
playground, paddleboats, miniature golf, fi shing, Native American and
Wildlife exhibits, Fudge Kitchen, snack bar, and gift and souvenir shops.
Just off Route 209 in Bushkill, Bushkill Falls opens daily at 9:00am;
admission includes entrance to all exhibits. See the calendar of events,
directions, and nearby accommodations at www.visitbushkillfalls.com,

Promised Land has Turtle Basking Platforms Promised Land State Park announces that Eagle Scout candidate Eric
Mantz has installed 4 turtle basking platforms; 2 in Promised Land Lake,
and 2 in Lower Lake. Reptiles use the environment to regulate their body
temperature, and the platforms serve as a necessary base for aquatic turtles
to bask in the sun. Painted Turtles bask upon dead logs, but logs don’t offer
enough room, causing the turtles to fi ght. The new platforms not only offer
a larger basking surface, they also allow boaters to view turtles up close,
and help park staff to monitor the number of Painted Turtles as well as
invasive, non-native Red-Eared Sliders.
The platforms are made of Hemlock, and PVC pipe attached to the
base provides buoyancy. Each platform is anchored by 2 cinder blocks
via a 10’ wire. They are PA Fish & Boat Commission approved, and are
permanent fi xtures. Park staff is grateful to Eric Mantz, who spent 50+
hours working with his Scout Troop and his family to build and install the platforms. A plaque, mounted at the Wildlife
Observation Station at Bear Wallow, commemorates the project. Turtle basking platform plans are available from the
park. Those interested in conducting an Eagle Scout project or a Gold Award project at Promised Land State Park may
contact Carissa Longo at (570) 676-0567 or [email protected]. Bask at www.visitPAparks.com.

Grey Towers Heritage Helps Re-Plant National Forests
Collaborating with the National Forest Foundation Tree For Me
planting program, the Grey Towers Heritage Association (GTHA) has
used member donations to revitalize forested landscapes damaged
by wildfi re, helping to plant 32 trees on National Forests last year! “We
feel this is an appropriate and long-lasting use of a small portion of our donors’
funds,” said Barbara Buchanan, President of the GTHA. “Gifford Pinchot was the fi rst chief of the US Forest
Service and he and President Theodore Roosevelt established the National Forests. Today we are helping to
perpetuate his legacy in so many different ways, including planting trees.”
Grey Towers is the ancestral home of Gifford Pinchot, who also was Governor of Pennsylvania. The
GTHA mission is to carry forward the Pinchot legacy through programs and projects at Grey Towers. The
National Forest Foundation Tree For Me program cultivates countless benefi ts for public national forests.
While restoring burned and otherwise damaged forest landscapes, planting trees rebuilds healthy wildlife
habitat, protects critical watersheds, enhances recreation experiences, and helps address global warming. Learn how
to support the GTHA and its programs at www.greytowers.org, or call (570) 296-9625.
