Look at life-size history at Eckley
Miners’ Village, an authentic 19th-cen-

thriving, company-owned coal min-
ing “patch town.” With the advent of
strip mining in the 20th century, under-
ground mining became obsolete, and
scores of patch towns disappeared
along with the jobs. The Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission has
carefully restored Eckley, providing the
rare opportunity to glimpse a past way
of life. The kitchens and bedrooms, per-
sonal items, clothes, chairs, outhouses,
and laundry rooms all remain as if last
used yesterday! See homes, churches,
social clubs, general store, doctor’s of-

staff permitting, walking tour guides
describe life in 19th century mining
towns, giving narrative on how these
folks lived day-to-day. Eckley Miners’
Village is 9 miles east of Hazelton, off

This Week in the Poconos 27
Fish On in the Pocono Mountains The Pocono Mountains are known for excellent coldwater trout fi shing! Brook Trout, Brown Trout, and Rainbow
Trout abound, promising challenging sport fi shing and wonderful eating. Miles of cold, clear streams have parking areas,
but some require packing up your gear and hiking in. Purchase your license, select a rod between 5’ and 7’ long, and a
spinning reel for distance, accuracy, and high retrieve speed; 4 to 8-pound test fi shing line is ideal. Use a tackle box to
organize your equipment, and a fi shing vest for hands-free hiking and casting.
Check the forecast, dress properly, and wear waders or hip boots designed for trout fi shing, as you’ll have better
access to trout hideouts. Polarized glasses allow you to see submerged hiding spots; you may even see the trout! Most
anglers prefer to net the fi sh, rather than landing it on the bank. Live bait includes worms, minnows, and insects. Use a
short-shank hook with a split shot sinker or a bobber; the bait should swim around and look lively.
Refer to the rulebook accompanying your license,
as some streams are posted that only artifi cial lures
may be used; these include spinners, spoons, fl ies, and
imitation minnows. You provide the action, fooling fi sh
into perceiving the bait as alive. Fly-fi shing to imitate
insects or minnows requires special equipment, study, and
practice, but fi sh can be lured to strike a well-presented
fl y. A skilled fl y-fi sher will learn which aquatic insects
are hatching, use a fl y imitating that insect, and matchthe hatch.
Trout hide in still water, hover near moving water,
and cruise shallows in the early morning and late evening.
Cast upstream, and the current will fl ow past a hiding
fi sh; or, cast downstream and reel back through. Sink a
worm into a deep hole, and let the trout sniff it out. When
you feel a bite, pull sharply to set the hook. Play the fi sh
until it’s tired, and then net it. Be creative, experiment
with techniques, switch lures or bait, fi sh the surface and
the depths, and vary your retrieve speed. Half the fun of
fi shing is outsmarting the fi sh!
Fish & Pay Lakes are Easy!
Sit back and relax while you wait for the big one to bite at Big Brown Fish & Pay Lakes on Route 115 in Effort, where 3 large ponds on 10 beau-
tiful acres are stocked with trout and bass. Rod and reel rental, bait and
tackle shop, picnic tables, and park benches make for an enjoyable ex-
perience, and no license is required. It’s easy, affordable, and fun for all!
The Fish & Pay Lakes and hatchery are open daily; ages 11 and under are
admitted free. Call (570) 629-0427, email bigbrownfi [email protected], visit
www.bigbrownfi sh.com, and use the coupon in the display ad. Everyone
loves the action at Big Brown, “where the fi sh are always biting!”
Reel in a glistening trout from a pond brimming with fi sh in a gorgeous
mountain setting at Paradise Fishing Preserve in Paradise Valley! No license
is needed, and you’ll fi nd pole rental, bait and tackle, picnic tables, park
benches, and a pavilion. It’s easy, inexpensive, and a great way to intro-
duce a newbie to the sport; ages 11 and under are admitted free. Quality
since 1902, the original Paradise Brook Trout Hatchery was the fi rst private,

Celebrating the American Chestnut
Arbor Day is observed on the last Friday in April; on Wednesday, April
27th at 6:30pm, you’re invited to the PPL Wallenpaupack Environmental
Learning Center (WELC) to celebrate successful experimentation with na-
tive trees. Foresters and volunteers have assisted the American Chestnut
Foundation with efforts to breed a blight-resistant line of American chestnut
for re-establishment. Celebrating the American Chestnut will review efforts to
locate surviving chestnuts, produce back-cross seedlings through controlled
pollination, and test seedlings in a local orchard. This orchard will contribute
regionally-adapted parent trees to restore the chestnut to its former range,
which includes the Pocono Plateau.
The WELC, adjacent to the dam on Route 6, is operated in connection
with the Wallenpaupack hydroelectric plant. In 1926, PPL completed construc-
tion of the Wallenpaupack dam and power plant along the Lackawaxen River.
In addition to its capacity to generate 44 megawatts of electricity, the 5,700-
acre man-made lake plays a critical role in regional water management, and is a
popular locale for outdoor recreation. PPL protects land, cares for endangered
species and habitats, and provides recreational facilities for the public to learn
about and enjoy nature’s beauty. Programs are free. Call (570) 253-7076, email

40 This Week in the Poconos
Bushkill Falls, the Niagara of Pennsylvania
Since 1904 when Charles E. Peters realized his dream, Bushkill
Falls, and charged just 10¢/person on opening day, visitors can
imagine the Leni Lenape who inhabited the area. Step into the life-
size longhouse in the Native American exhibit, look up through the
smoke hole, and visualize cooking and sleeping there. The displays
of utensils and hunting equipment are a reminder that meals involved
more than a simple trip to the grocery store or fast food franchise.
Bushkill Falls is a very do-able day trip. “It’s much easier to get to
Bushkill Falls today than it was in 1917,” comments General Manager
Donna Smith. “We pride ourselves in maintaining Mr. Peters’ dream.
It’s a piece of history that can never be replaced.” Enjoy walking
trails with well-constructed stairs and bridges; challenge the Red
Trail, a 2-mile hike around all 8 waterfalls!
Free parking and picnic area with grills add to the affordable
appeal. An open-air pavilion can be rented for events! You’ll fi nd a
playground, paddleboats, miniature golf, fi shing, Native American and Wildlife exhibits, Fudge Kitchen, snack bar, and
gift and souvenir shops. Just off Route 209 in Bushkill, Bushkill Falls opens daily at 9:00am; admission includes entrance
to all exhibits. See the calendar of events, directions, and nearby accommodations at www.visitbushkillfalls.com, or call

New! Pocono Xterra Trail Run Series Wilkes-Barre Racing, Inc. announces a major new athletic event in the Pocono
Mountains, The Pocono Xterra Trail Run Series, presented by Wendy’s. This 5-race
series challenges you to run through woods, fi elds, and streams, as well as over
rocks, boulders, and cliffs as you experience remote and breathtaking scenery.
Runners who win their age groups qualify for the Xterra National Trail Running Championships in Bend, Oregon.
“We are thrilled to bring one of the biggest names in off road racing – Xterra
- to the Pocono Mountains of NEPA”, stated Rich Pais, Executive Director for Wilkes-
Barre Racing. The series draw trail runners from all over, in addition to introducing
local athletes to an exciting sport. “Many runners get bored running the same street
courses day after day and race after race. In the woods, every day is different and every step a challenge.” Courses
include cliff faces, swamps, and tunnels of rhododendron.
Wilkes-Barre Racing is non-profi t, using proceeds from events to support foster care and adoption in northeastern
Pennsylvania. “That’s one reason why Wendy’s is a strong supporter of Xterra Series” says Emily Ahnert, Wendy’s
franchisee in the Pocono region. “Dave Thomas, the founder of Wendy’s,
believed that orphans weren’t someone else’s responsibility, they are our
responsibility.”
Registration fee for the 5-race series is $100.00, due before May
7th. Race locales and dates are: Big Pocono State Park, May 7th; Seven
Tubs Nature Area, May 21st; Hickory Run State Park, June 4th; Gouldsboro
